Working remotely for a company or client in the United States or Europe can be an attractive career path for digital marketers in Kenya. A marketer does not necessarily need to relocate to another country to work with international businesses. With a reliable internet connection, the right skills and a portfolio that demonstrates what you can actually do, it is possible to present yourself to clients outside the Kenyan market.
However, one major challenge faces many aspiring remote marketers: how do you prove your ability when you have never worked for a US or European company?
The answer is to build proof of work before waiting for someone to give you international experience.
A strong portfolio can demonstrate your understanding of search engine optimisation (SEO), paid advertising, social media management, content strategy, analytics and other digital marketing activities. You can build many of these examples using free or low-cost tools, your own website, a small Kenyan business, a personal project or a simulated campaign.
The objective is not to pretend that a local project was an international campaign. Instead, you should demonstrate that you understand the principles and can apply them to different markets.
A CV can tell a potential client that you understand SEO or Google Ads.
A portfolio can show them.
This distinction is important when competing for remote work.
An employer in another country may not know your previous employer or organisation. They may therefore want evidence that you can perform the work described in your application.
For example, saying:
"I have SEO experience."
is much less informative than showing:
"Here is a website I optimised. I identified technical issues, conducted keyword research, improved the page structure and tracked organic search performance."
The second approach gives the client something concrete to evaluate.
Your portfolio does not need to contain confidential information from previous employers. You can create independent projects specifically to demonstrate your abilities.
Digital marketing is a broad field, and trying to become an expert in everything at once can make your portfolio unfocused.
Three areas can provide a practical starting point for someone targeting remote international work:
SEO
PPC and paid advertising
Social media management
You can eventually add email marketing, content marketing, analytics, conversion optimisation or marketing automation.
However, start with one or two areas where you can build strong evidence.
For example, you could position yourself as an SEO and content marketer or as a paid media and social media specialist.
A focused portfolio makes it easier for a potential client to understand what you offer.
SEO is particularly suitable for portfolio building because you can create your own website and use it as a testing environment.
You do not need a large international company to demonstrate that you understand search optimisation.
Create a simple website around a subject you understand.
It could be a blog, information website, local business site or personal project.
Then document the work you perform.
For example, you could show:
Keyword research
Page title optimisation
Meta descriptions
Internal linking
Content structure
Image optimisation
Technical SEO checks
Search Console monitoring
Analytics reporting
Content updates
You can then create a case study explaining what you changed and what happened afterward.
Do not claim that your work caused a particular result unless you have evidence supporting the claim.
If organic traffic increased after several months, show the relevant data and explain the period being compared.
That is much more credible than simply writing "I increased traffic by 300%" without evidence.
Another way to build experience is to help a small Kenyan business.
You might approach a restaurant, salon, shop, professional service provider or small online business and offer to improve its online visibility.
You could help optimise its website or create a content strategy in exchange for permission to use the project as a portfolio case study.
The business does not have to be large.
What matters is documenting the process professionally.
For example:
Small Nairobi-based service business.
The website had limited organic visibility and poorly structured service pages.
Keyword research, page restructuring, internal linking and content improvements.
Organic impressions, clicks, rankings and relevant enquiries before and after the work.
Present the actual measured outcome.
This gives an international client evidence that you have worked with a real organisation.
Paid advertising can be more difficult to demonstrate without spending money because real campaigns require advertising budgets.
Fortunately, you can still demonstrate your strategic knowledge without pretending that you managed a large advertising account.
Google's Skillshop provides online Google Ads training and certifications. Its official training covers areas including Search, Display and measurement, and the platform allows learners to work through training at their own pace.
After completing relevant training, you can add the certification to your professional profiles where appropriate.
But remember that a certificate is not the same thing as campaign experience.
A potential client may be more interested in seeing whether you can actually create a campaign strategy.
You can create a hypothetical campaign for a business targeting customers in the United States or Europe.
For example, imagine you are marketing a home-cleaning company in Texas.
Build a sample campaign containing:
Target audience
Campaign objective
Keyword groups
Negative keywords
Sample advertisements
Landing-page recommendations
Conversion goal
Budget assumptions
Measurement plan
Clearly label it as a simulated project.
Do not present the campaign as an actual client campaign.
The purpose is to demonstrate your ability to think through a paid-search strategy.
A portfolio becomes more useful when it explains why you made certain decisions.
Instead of simply showing three advertisements, explain why one headline focuses on price, another on convenience and another on a specific customer problem.
Explain what you would test.
Explain which metrics you would monitor.
These details demonstrate strategic thinking rather than simply showing that you know how to write advertising copy.
Social media is another area where you can create proof of work without waiting for an international employer to hire you.
Start by choosing a business category.
You could create a fictional campaign for a US fitness company, a European fashion brand or a software business.
Again, make it clear that the project is a demonstration or mock campaign.
Instead of displaying random social media graphics, create a structured campaign.
For example, prepare a two-week content calendar containing:
Educational posts
Promotional posts
Customer-focused content
Short-form video concepts
Engagement posts
Calls to action
Suggested posting times
Performance metrics to monitor
Then create several sample posts.
Your portfolio should show that you understand why different types of content are used rather than simply demonstrating graphic-design skills.
A client may want someone who understands more than one social network.
Depending on your specialisation, your portfolio could demonstrate content strategies for platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok or X.
However, do not claim experience managing an account simply because you created sample content for it.
Use accurate descriptions such as "sample campaign," "portfolio project" or "spec campaign."
Honesty makes your portfolio more credible.
One of the biggest mistakes Kenyan marketers can make is assuming that only international experience is valuable.
A successful Kenyan case study can demonstrate skills that are transferable to other markets.
Suppose you helped a Nairobi business increase enquiries through social media.
The geographic location of the business does not prevent you from demonstrating that you understand:
Audience research
Content planning
Copywriting
Social media analytics
Conversion goals
Campaign testing
An American or European client can evaluate the skills involved and determine whether they are relevant to their own business.
The key is explaining the process clearly.
A useful case study can follow a simple structure.
Explain what problem existed.
Explain what you wanted to achieve.
Describe your approach.
Explain exactly what you did.
Mention the platforms and software used.
Present genuine measurements where available.
Explain what you would improve or test next.
This final section can make a case study particularly useful because it shows that you understand marketing as an ongoing process rather than a one-time activity.
Building an international-style portfolio does not require an expensive collection of software.
Depending on the project, you can use tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Google Ads tools, Google Trends, Canva and spreadsheet software.
Google's Skillshop also provides training for Google products, including Google Ads and Google Analytics.
For digital marketing education, HubSpot Academy offers free online courses and certifications covering areas such as digital marketing, SEO, social media, content marketing, email marketing and digital advertising.
HubSpot's digital advertising certification, for example, covers campaign strategy, audience targeting, conversion paths and evaluating advertising performance.
These resources can help you learn the theory while your portfolio demonstrates your practical application of it.
Certifications should support your portfolio rather than replace it.
For a marketer targeting international clients, relevant credentials can provide evidence that you have studied recognised platforms and concepts.
HubSpot Academy currently offers free certifications in several marketing disciplines, including digital marketing and social media.
Google Skillshop offers Google Ads training and certifications, including Search and Display learning paths.
Google's Skillshop also provides training around its measurement tools and analytics products.
Marketers interested in Facebook and Instagram advertising can also pursue relevant Meta learning and certification opportunities.
The important thing is to choose certifications connected to the services you actually intend to sell.
There is little benefit in collecting dozens of unrelated certificates while having no practical work to show.
Your portfolio should be easy for someone in another country to understand.
Avoid relying heavily on Kenyan-specific terminology without explanation.
For example, if you worked with a local business, explain what the business does and what your responsibilities were.
Use clear professional English.
Include:
Short professional introduction
Services offered
Case studies
Results
Tools
Certifications
Contact information
LinkedIn profile
Relevant work samples
You can host the portfolio on a simple website, personal domain, LinkedIn or another professional platform.
One of the strongest ways to improve a marketing portfolio is to focus on outcomes.
Instead of saying:
"Managed Instagram account."
Show:
"Planned and published a 30-day content campaign, monitored engagement and adjusted content based on audience response."
If you have genuine numerical results, include them.
For example:
"Organic impressions increased from X to Y during the reporting period."
"Cost per lead decreased from X to Y."
"Engagement rate increased from X% to Y%."
Always include the period and explain what was measured.
Avoid inventing numbers for portfolio projects.
Working remotely with international clients involves more than knowing marketing tools.
Communication is extremely important.
A client may expect you to:
Attend scheduled meetings
Provide regular reports
Explain campaign performance
Meet deadlines
Communicate problems early
Document your work
Respond professionally
Work with different time zones
You should therefore demonstrate these abilities during the process of finding work.
For example, create a sample monthly marketing report.
Include campaign objectives, performance metrics, observations and recommendations.
This gives potential clients an idea of what they would receive if they hired you.
You can start without having an international client.
Choose one service.
For example, start with SEO.
Build a small website.
Conduct keyword research.
Publish several pieces of content.
Optimise them.
Connect measurement tools.
Track performance.
Document the changes.
Then turn the project into a case study.
After that, create a second project focused on social media.
Finally, build a simulated PPC campaign and clearly label it as a sample project.
Within a few weeks or months, you can have several pieces of work demonstrating different areas of digital marketing.
The portfolio will not prove that you have worked for a US or European company. It will demonstrate that you understand the work involved and can produce professional marketing deliverables.
That distinction matters.
Do not hide the fact that you are based in Kenya.
Instead, present your experience professionally.
For example:
"Digital marketer based in Kenya, specialising in SEO, paid advertising and social media management for businesses seeking measurable online growth."
Your location does not have to be the central focus of your professional identity.
Your skills, results and ability to work remotely should be.
If you have worked with Kenyan companies, present the work as evidence of your marketing ability.
A local case study showing measurable improvement can be more useful than an empty portfolio claiming international expertise.
Building a remote digital marketing career from Kenya does not have to begin with an international employer.
It can begin with your own project.
Create a website and practise SEO. Build a simulated Google Ads campaign. Develop a social media content strategy. Help a local business and document the results. Complete relevant certifications. Turn each project into a professional case study.
Free learning resources can provide structured education. HubSpot Academy offers free digital marketing and advertising certifications, while Google Skillshop provides Google Ads and analytics training and certifications.
But certificates alone will not show a potential client exactly how you work.
Your portfolio should connect learning with evidence.
Show the problem, your strategy, the work you performed, the tools you used and the measurable outcome. When results are unavailable, show the quality of your strategy and deliverables while clearly identifying simulated work as simulated.
For Kenyan marketers targeting US and European clients, the objective should not be to create a portfolio that merely looks foreign. It should be to create a portfolio that communicates your skills clearly to an international audience.
Your location is part of your professional background. Your proof of work is what allows a potential client to evaluate what you can actually deliver.
