Cost Accountant
Hotel Storekeeper
COST ACCOUNTANT
The Cost Accountant will be responsible for overseeing cost control activities within the hotel, with particular focus on food and beverage costs, inventory accuracy, financial reporting, and internal controls. The role is intended to support effective financial management and contribute to the hotel’s profitability by ensuring that costs are properly monitored, recorded, analyzed, and controlled.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain accurate cost information, identify discrepancies, support inventory management, and provide relevant cost and variance information for financial decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
The Cost Accountant will be responsible for the following duties:
Cost Monitoring and Control
Monitor food and beverage costs regularly to ensure that the hotel remains within its targeted cost levels and achieves the required profit margins. This includes maintaining effective oversight of costs and identifying areas where variances may affect profitability.
Maintain effective internal cost control procedures and ensure that relevant cost information is accurately captured and monitored. The position will also involve identifying issues that may affect the hotel’s financial performance and reporting them appropriately.
Inventory Management and Stock Reconciliation
Conduct regular physical stock counts to establish accurate inventory levels. Physical stock records should be reconciled against the information contained in the relevant systems to identify and address any differences.
Monitor stock movement to ensure that inventory is properly accounted for from receipt through usage. The Cost Accountant will also be expected to identify discrepancies between physical stock and system records and report them accordingly.
Inventory losses should be identified and monitored, including losses arising from waste, spoilage, and breakages. These variances should be reported to support effective cost management and internal control.
Supplier Invoice and Purchase Verification
Monitor supplier invoices and verify them against corresponding purchase orders. This process should ensure that purchases and associated costs are properly supported and accurately recorded.
The Cost Accountant will also monitor pricing and identify any differences between expected and actual costs. Price variances and other discrepancies should be investigated and reported to the appropriate parties.
Menu Costing and Pricing
Prepare and maintain menu costing information to ensure that food and beverage costs are accurately reflected. The role will involve maintaining appropriate costing information for menu items and supporting the review of menu pricing.
Update menu pricing and POS pricing information as required. This will help ensure consistency between approved pricing information and the prices reflected within the point-of-sale system.
Cost and Financial Reporting
Generate reports relating to costs, margins, and variances. These reports should provide useful information for monitoring the hotel’s cost performance and identifying areas requiring attention.
Maintain accurate cost information and support effective internal reporting through timely and reliable cost, margin, and variance analysis.
Qualifications
Applicants for the Cost Accountant position should meet the following requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
A CPA (K) or ACCA qualification.
At least five years of relevant professional experience within the hospitality industry.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to work with financial and cost information.
Strong leadership and communication skills.
Proficiency in accounting software.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Previous experience in the hospitality industry will be an added advantage.
HOTEL STOREKEEPER
The Hotel Storekeeper will be responsible for managing inventory operations and ensuring that hotel supplies are properly received, recorded, stored, issued, and monitored. The position plays an important role in supporting the efficient operation of different hotel departments by maintaining accurate stock records and ensuring that supplies are available when required.
The successful candidate should have experience in storekeeping and should be familiar with inventory control procedures, stock management, documentation, and proper storage practices.
Key Responsibilities
The Hotel Storekeeper will be responsible for the following:
Receiving and Verifying Supplies
Receive incoming goods and carefully inspect them to confirm that the quality, quantity, and details correspond with the relevant requirements.
Verify received supplies for accuracy before accepting them into the hotel’s inventory. Any discrepancies identified during the receiving process should be addressed appropriately.
Inventory Records and Stock Movement
Maintain accurate records of all inventory held by the hotel. All stock movements should be recorded properly to ensure that the inventory records remain current and reliable.
Update inventory information whenever goods are received, issued, or otherwise moved within the stores operation.
Issuing of Supplies
Issue supplies only when supported by authorized requisitions. Ensure that appropriate documentation is maintained for all stock issued from the store.
Proper documentation should be retained to provide an accurate record of inventory movement and support effective stock control.
Stock Level Monitoring and Replenishment
Monitor inventory levels to ensure that the hotel maintains appropriate quantities of required supplies. Identify items that require replenishment and coordinate with the Purchasing Department to facilitate timely restocking.
Effective stock monitoring should help ensure that hotel departments have access to the supplies required for their operations.
Stock Counts and Reconciliation
Conduct regular physical stock counts to establish the actual quantity of inventory available. Reconcile physical stock levels against the relevant inventory records and identify any discrepancies.
Any differences between physical inventory and recorded stock should be investigated and addressed appropriately.
Storage and Stock Rotation
Ensure that all supplies are stored correctly and handled appropriately to maintain their condition and quality.
Apply the FIFO, or First In, First Out, method when rotating stock. This requires older stock to be used before newer stock where applicable, helping to maintain proper stock rotation.
Inventory Reporting
Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports relating to inventory and stock consumption. These reports should provide accurate information regarding stock levels, movements, and consumption.
Policies and Procedures
Adhere to the hotel’s policies, procurement procedures, and established inventory control standards at all times. Ensure that storekeeping activities are conducted in accordance with the relevant procedures.
Qualifications
Applicants for the Hotel Storekeeper position should meet the following requirements:
A Diploma or Degree in Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Stores Management, Hospitality Management, or a related field.
At least three years of experience in storekeeping, preferably within the hospitality industry.
Knowledge of inventory management and stock control procedures.
Knowledge and understanding of the FIFO inventory system.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Proficiency in inventory management or hotel management systems.
Strong organizational skills.
Good communication skills.
Strong record-keeping abilities.
High attention to detail.
