Project Overview
AGROBLUE – Promoting Sustainable Agriculture and Blue Economy in Kenya is a 36-month programme being implemented across Galole, Tana Delta, Msambweni, and Lunga Lunga sub-counties in Kwale and Tana River Counties.
The initiative is delivered through a consortium of organizations with expertise in climate-resilient agriculture and blue economy interventions. Action Against Hunger (ACF) leads the consortium in partnership with the European Committee for Training and Agriculture (CEFA), MWARP, and Politecnico di Milano. The programme works in coordination with the Ministries of Agriculture and Health to strengthen institutional ownership and support lasting results.
AGROBLUE seeks to improve household food security, strengthen incomes, and increase communities' ability to withstand food and climate-related shocks. Its approach combines climate-smart production, gender-responsive programming, livelihood diversification, and environmental protection. The programme addresses challenges such as low production levels, post-harvest losses, and limited economic opportunities for women by equipping farmers and fishing communities with relevant knowledge, technologies, services, and productive assets.
The intervention focuses on three broad areas:
Improve access for smallholder farmers and artisanal fishers to appropriate products, services, technologies, and knowledge that support climate-resilient production and fishing practices while reducing pressure on natural ecosystems.
Strengthen access to technical assistance, financial services, infrastructure, and knowledge that enable rural and coastal households to manage value chains more sustainably, add value to their products, and increase or diversify household incomes.
Promote awareness of healthy nutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups such as women and children, while encouraging improved access to and consumption of varied and nutritious foods.
Under the programme, CEFA will implement activities focused on fisheries and beekeeping, working with farmer groups and Beach Management Units (BMUs). Support will include practical training, equipment provision, and technical assistance using a value-chain approach that covers production, post-harvest handling, processing, and marketing.
Position Overview
The Beekeeping Expert will provide technical leadership for the planning, implementation, and quality assurance of all apiculture-related activities under the AGROBLUE Project. Working closely with CEFA personnel, local partners, technical consultants, and participating community groups, the expert will ensure that beekeeping interventions are practical, technically appropriate, climate-resilient, and aligned with the project's objectives and implementation plan.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Guidance and Field Support
Oversee the delivery of beekeeping activities in collaboration with the Project Officer/Project Manager, technical consultants, and wider project team.
Conduct regular field visits to participating beekeeping groups and provide practical guidance on colony management, queen identification, pest and disease management, harvesting, and other relevant apiculture practices.
Carry out technical assessments of established apiaries to evaluate colony health, hive performance, and colonization levels.
Investigate factors contributing to poor or slow hive colonization and recommend practical, sustainable corrective measures.
Strengthen the capacity of beekeepers in areas such as hygiene, product handling, consumer awareness, product presentation, promotion, and marketing.
Provide hands-on technical support and additional coaching where groups encounter challenges that could affect their production targets.
Monitor the correct use, maintenance, and care of hives and other beekeeping equipment to minimize damage, misuse, or abandonment of project assets.
Develop practical recommendations suited to the environmental and climatic conditions of Tana River, taking into consideration local bee behavior, seasonal flowering patterns, and forage availability.
Prepare and submit detailed work plans within the agreed timelines to the Project Officer/Project Manager.
Contribute technical input to the development of implementation approaches that can deliver sustainable results beyond the project period.
Identify technical or operational challenges early and work with the Project Officer/Project Manager to develop appropriate solutions.
Training and Quality Management
Provide technical oversight to consultants engaged to deliver beekeeping training.
Monitor training sessions to ensure the content, methodology, and practical demonstrations are relevant to the conditions and needs of participating communities.
Assess the quality and effectiveness of training activities and monitor how well participating groups apply the knowledge gained.
Identify skills gaps that remain after formal training and arrange or recommend additional technical support where necessary.
Ensure that capacity-building activities translate into practical improvements in beekeeping performance and productivity.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting
Monitor implementation progress against approved work plans, targets, and project indicators.
Track the adoption of sustainable, modern, and climate-smart beekeeping practices among participating groups.
Prepare periodic technical reports covering areas such as colony health, hive productivity, colonization rates, production performance, and achievement against targets.
Regularly assess the effectiveness of training and technical support provided to participating beekeepers.
Maintain accurate technical documentation and contribute relevant information required for project reporting and implementation records.
Undertake other duties and technical assignments related to the position as directed by the Project Manager or relevant project leadership.
Minimum Requirements
University degree in Agriculture, Apiculture, or a related discipline such as Veterinary Science, Forestry, Zoology, or a comparable field.
At least 4 years of relevant professional experience involving apiculture or beekeeping activities.
Demonstrated experience delivering or facilitating practical beekeeping training.
Previous participation in beekeeping or apiculture study tours, technical exchanges, or similar learning programmes is desirable.
Experience in the promotion, marketing, and commercialization of honey and other beekeeping products.
Strong practical competence in handling bees safely under different field conditions.
Ability to assess colonies, identify queen bees, evaluate hive and colony conditions, and support effective colony management.
Knowledge and practical experience in honeybee product preparation, quality assessment, pest and disease identification, and appropriate treatment or control measures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.
Good understanding of Tana River County, including its environmental conditions and the characteristics of coastal and semi-arid apiculture systems.
A valid Kenyan motorcycle riding licence, at least Class A2, is an added advantage, together with the ability and willingness to travel by motorcycle in rural and remote locations.
