Medical Officer

Position Overview

The Medical Officer will provide comprehensive clinical care to both inpatient and outpatient populations by diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions. The role involves delivering evidence-based care, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, promoting patient safety, and supporting continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients by obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and establishing appropriate diagnoses.

• Provide high-quality medical management for patients with acute, chronic, and complex health conditions in both outpatient clinics and inpatient units.

• Participate in the assessment, stabilization, and treatment of emergency and critically ill patients in accordance with established clinical protocols.

• Interpret diagnostic investigations, formulate individualized treatment plans, and monitor patients' clinical progress throughout their care.

• Work closely with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, nurses, allied health professionals, and other clinicians to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.

• Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary case discussions, morbidity reviews, and clinical audit activities.

• Maintain complete, accurate, and confidential medical records in accordance with legal, ethical, and institutional requirements.

• Educate patients and their families on disease prevention, treatment options, medication adherence, and healthy lifestyle practices.

• Adhere to hospital policies, infection prevention and control standards, quality assurance measures, and patient safety guidelines.

• Engage in continuous professional development, clinical research, and quality improvement programs to enhance healthcare delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from a recognized institution.

• Valid registration and a current practicing licence issued by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).

• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification will be an added advantage.

• At least two (2) years of post-internship clinical experience in a busy healthcare facility.

• Previous experience in cardiology, emergency medicine, critical care, or internal medicine will be an added advantage.

Cardiac Sonographer

Position Overview

The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for performing specialized cardiac ultrasound examinations, supporting accurate diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions, and contributing to high-quality patient care through effective collaboration with the multidisciplinary clinical team.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment and Care

• Review patient histories, clinical notes, laboratory findings, and examination requests before conducting procedures.

• Verify patient information and gather relevant clinical details to ensure appropriate diagnostic imaging.

• Explain examination procedures to patients and their families, providing reassurance and promoting a positive patient experience.

• Deliver basic emergency care within the scope of practice until advanced medical assistance becomes available.

• Communicate urgent or significant clinical findings promptly to physicians and other members of the healthcare team.

Equipment and Department Management

• Monitor the condition and performance of echocardiography and electrocardiography equipment and initiate maintenance requests when necessary.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked examination environment.

• Support the training, mentorship, and competency development of junior staff in cardiac imaging procedures.

• Safeguard patient confidentiality and ensure secure handling of clinical information.

• Practice in accordance with institutional values, professional ethics, and applicable regulatory standards.

Diagnostic Imaging

• Perform comprehensive echocardiographic studies, including two-dimensional (2D), colour Doppler, and spectral Doppler examinations to evaluate cardiac anatomy and function.

• Identify abnormal cardiac findings requiring urgent clinical review and promptly communicate significant changes to the interpreting physician.

• Provide cardiac imaging support for critically ill patients in intensive care units, emergency departments, operating theatres, catheterization laboratories, and inpatient wards.

• Operate cardiac ultrasound equipment during stress echocardiography, contrast echocardiography, and other specialized diagnostic procedures.

• Prepare preliminary examination findings and assist in generating reports for both adult and paediatric patients.

• Upload examination results into electronic reporting systems and guide patients regarding recommended follow-up care.

• Correctly position electrocardiogram (ECG) leads to facilitate accurate cardiac monitoring during diagnostic procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Diploma in Medical Imaging (Radiography), or another relevant qualification from a recognized institution.

• Postgraduate qualification, Higher Diploma, certificate, or formal training in Cardiac Sonography.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is desirable.

• Valid registration with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya (COC) or the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), as applicable.

• Minimum of two (2) years of practical experience performing echocardiography and other cardiac diagnostic procedures.
