Computer Management Assistant
Job Overview
The Computer Management Assistant (CMA) is part of the Information Systems Center at Embassy Nairobi and shares responsibility for supporting the Embassy’s technology environment. As a senior member of the 17-person team, the CMA provides technical direction to agile teams and frequently takes the lead on technology projects.
The role covers a broad range of infrastructure, hardware, software, and cloud services, including physical and virtual servers, routers, switches, cloud applications, mass storage systems, VPN connections, digital signage, audio-visual equipment, workstations, and other computer peripherals. The position provides technical assistance to users both locally and remotely.
System Administration and Management – 25%
Proactively identify potential network issues and take appropriate action to maintain reliable network operations and maximum possible uptime.
Work with ENM, ITSC, relevant Washington offices, and the Nairobi CIS team to configure VPN equipment and investigate network latency.
Monitor network line availability and client switch configurations.
Coordinate failover to an alternative VPN route when required.
User Support – 25%
Provide advanced technical assistance to the IRM Help Desk Support Team as a second- and third-level support resource.
Troubleshoot hardware such as computers and printers, as well as software and services including SharePoint office file shares, OneDrive, and Office 365.
Take ownership of assigned help desk tickets and tasks through to resolution.
Resolve issues promptly, document the actions taken in the Help Desk comments, and close completed tickets.
Deliver a consistently high level of customer service when assisting users.
Assess user requirements, provide technical advice, and recommend suitable technology solutions and tools.
IT Consulting and Technical Project Management – 20%
Act as one of the lead IT consultants, working directly with users to understand technology gaps and develop solutions tailored to their requirements.
Introduce users to improved computing tools, technologies, and solutions.
Conduct technology talks and other knowledge-sharing sessions when necessary.
Promote the adoption of new tools and technologies and help users adapt to changes.
Champion solutions that improve efficiency, management visibility, transparency, and collaboration across the interagency.
Mobile Computing Support – 15%
Configure and prepare mobile computing equipment for use with different government systems as part of supporting an increasingly mobile workforce.
Support devices such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, virtual and augmented reality headsets, mobile internet routers, public address systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and other emerging equipment.
Register and activate users on Department information platforms.
Create and maintain user accounts and authentication services that provide access to applications and services through VPN.
Support services including GO Mobile, GO Desktop, GO Virtual, and FAN.gov.
Systems Engineering and Design – 10%
Design and engineer technology systems for the Nairobi mission, including audio-visual systems, virtual meeting rooms, conference facilities, digital signage, DIN network architecture, and Public Diplomacy American Center spaces.
Provide continuing back-end technical support for these systems.
Gather user requirements and work with IRM management to develop scopes of work (SOW) and bills of materials (BOM) for procurement activities.
Recommend suitable technologies, components, and equipment while ensuring they have the required approval from the Information Technology Configuration Control Board (ITCCB) or the appropriate Department of State office.
Ensure systems and equipment comply with Department security requirements and are authorised for use on applicable networks and within government facilities.
Regularly assess installed systems and recommend upgrades, replacements, refreshes, or re-engineering where necessary.
Other Duties – 5%

Qualifications and Requirements
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
University degree in Computer Science or Information Technology.
