About this role
Solar Design Engineer
Help turn customer energy requirements into solar systems that are technically sound, commercially viable, and ready to build.
This role sits between engineering, customers, sales, project delivery, and installation. You’ll take information from the field and from prospective clients, translate it into practical system designs, and remain involved as projects move from concept through commissioning and evaluation.
The engineering work
You’ll assess each project from both a technical and commercial perspective.
Your responsibilities will include:
Conducting site assessments covering solar irradiance, shading, structural conditions, electrical requirements, and other factors affecting system design.
Reviewing leads from sales and business development teams, understanding customer requirements, and preparing technical and commercial proposals.
Developing deployment plans for solar projects, including monitoring and evaluation requirements.
Producing detailed layouts using CAD and relevant PV design or simulation software, covering panel arrangements, inverters, mounting systems, and electrical diagrams.
Performing yield calculations, string sizing, loss analysis, ROI assessments, and other engineering simulations to optimize system performance and cost.
Designing battery energy storage systems and hybrid inverter configurations where customer load profiles require them.
Preparing technical documentation and working with sales, procurement, project management, and installation teams to build complete project proposals.
Providing engineering support during planning, installation, commissioning, and post-project assessment.
Participating in customer meetings, presentations, and site visits to explain proposed solutions and resolve technical questions.
Supporting EPRA licensing, permitting, and project compliance documentation.
Keeping up with developments in solar PV, energy storage, regulations, and industry practice.
What you’ll need
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related discipline.
A Master’s degree is an advantage.
At least 5 years of experience in solar PV design and engineering, preferably involving commercial, industrial, or utility-scale projects.
Practical proficiency with AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software.
Experience with PVsyst, Helioscope, PVCase, PV*SOL, or comparable PV modelling and simulation tools.
Strong understanding of PV technologies, system components, electrical principles, battery energy storage, and system performance.
Familiarity with NEC, IEEE, IEC, Kenyan building codes, EPRA requirements, and permitting processes.
Strong analytical and decision-making ability, with close attention to technical detail and quality.
Effective communication skills and the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.
A valid EPRA T3 License is required.
PE registration, or EIT/Graduate Engineer status with the Engineers Board of Kenya, is an advantage.
Willingness to travel to customer and project sites.
A valid driving licence is an advantage.
The ideal engineer
You’ll be comfortable moving between calculations, drawings, customer conversations, and project teams. The role requires someone who can make technically rigorous decisions while keeping an eye on cost, performance, regulatory compliance, and the practical realities of installation.
Lead Solar Installer
Take ownership of solar installations from the first site check through commissioning and handover.
This is a hands-on leadership position for an experienced solar installer who can lead crews in the field while still being capable of getting involved directly with installation, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
Your site responsibilities
You’ll be responsible for turning approved engineering designs into safe, accurate installations.
That means:
Leading installers and technicians on project sites and allocating work to keep crews productive and organized.
Reviewing drawings, single-line diagrams, and site layouts before and during installation.
Checking roofs, ground conditions, structural readiness, access, and other site requirements before mobilization.
Installing and supervising the installation of mounting structures, PV panels, inverters, batteries/BESS, combiner boxes, and associated wiring.
Ensuring completed work follows approved designs, EPRA requirements, electrical codes, manufacturer specifications, and customer safety standards.
Testing systems and supporting commissioning, including string testing, grounding/earthing checks, fault-finding, and inverter configuration.
Recording installation progress, completing checklists, and preparing handover documentation.
Reporting project status and technical issues to the Project Manager and Design Engineer.
Controlling site tools, equipment, and materials and reconciling them against project bills of materials.
Supporting troubleshooting, warranty visits, and post-installation maintenance when required.
Safety comes first
You’ll be expected to enforce HSE procedures throughout every installation.
Particular attention will be required around electrical work, rooftop activities, working at height, equipment handling, and other site-specific risks.
You’ll also help create a stronger installation team by coaching junior installers and technicians, reinforcing good workmanship, and maintaining consistent working practices.
Working with customers
You’ll be a visible representative of the company on site.
When customers have installation-related questions, you’ll provide clear and professional responses, coordinate with engineers and project managers where necessary, and help ensure the completed installation leaves a positive customer impression.
What you bring
A Diploma or Certificate in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installation, Renewable Energy, or a related technical field.
At least 4 years of practical solar PV installation experience.
1–2 years of experience in a lead or supervisory installation role.
Strong hands-on knowledge of panels, mounting structures, inverters, batteries/BESS, combiner boxes, and balance-of-system wiring.
Sound understanding of electrical installation, grounding/earthing, and relevant NEC, IEEE, IEC, Kenyan building, and electrical requirements.
A valid EPRA T2 License is required; T3 is an advantage.
Familiarity with electrical and working-at-height safety procedures.
OSHA, NEBOSH, or equivalent HSE certification is an advantage.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, single-line diagrams, and installation schedules.
Strong crew leadership, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Willingness to travel extensively to project locations across Kenya, including remote sites.
A valid driving licence is an advantage.
