KVM Jobs in Nairobi – Paint Technician, Logistics Technician and Welding Technician
KVM has opportunities in Nairobi for technical professionals working in vehicle production, painting, welding and logistics. The three positions—Paint Technician, Logistics Technician and Welding Technician—sit in different parts of the operation, but each requires practical ability, attention to detail and a strong commitment to safe and efficient work.
These are hands-on positions for people who are comfortable working with equipment, materials, vehicles or production processes. The available roles also have different experience and qualification requirements, making it important for applicants to consider the specific expectations of the position they are interested in before applying.
Paint Technician: Where Preparation Determines the Finish
A good vehicle paint finish begins long before the spray gun is used. For the Paint Technician position, much of the work involves preparing surfaces properly, identifying imperfections and making sure the vehicle is ready for the painting process.
The technician will inspect vehicle bodies and frames to determine the appropriate repair and painting approach. Preparing the surface can involve sanding areas that require painting, identifying irregularities and removing old paint or rust through scraping, grinding, sanding, brushing or the use of paint remover.
Where bare metal has been exposed, neutralising and chemical conditioning solutions may also need to be applied. The technician must follow the required process carefully because the quality of the preparation directly affects the final paint application.
The work can also involve removing, installing, adjusting and aligning different body components so that painting can be completed effectively. These may include fenders, doors, door panels, hoods, deck lids, grills, weather strips, bumpers, roofs and quarter panels.
Another part of the preparation process involves using body filler to build up depressed areas before the surface is finished for painting. Once the vehicle is properly prepared, the technician will mix paint according to the manufacturer's required ratios and use spray-painting equipment to carry out painting and necessary rework.
Quality remains important throughout the process. The technician is expected to make sure the finished work meets the required standards while also working according to production schedules. Good record keeping and reporting are part of the paint process, and the technician will also carry out other related duties assigned by the Paint Engineer.
For this position, applicants should have completed secondary education and have relevant professional preparation. A Spray Painter Grade III Trade Test is required, while specialised training or certification in paint technology would be an added advantage. The role calls for someone who can work accurately and methodically, with three years of relevant experience from a recognised organisation. Previous exposure to automotive paint processes or a similar manufacturing role is preferred.
Logistics Technician: Keeping Materials Moving
The Logistics Technician role takes a very different path from painting and welding. Here, the central responsibility is the safe and efficient movement of materials within the plant using a forklift.
The technician will operate a forklift to move, stack and retrieve materials. Before beginning a shift, the forklift must be inspected, with any maintenance or repair requirements reported promptly.
However, the position goes beyond forklift operation. The technician may also support a range of general logistics activities across different shop floors. Communication is particularly important because logistics activities need to connect smoothly with other staff, supervisors and production teams.
One responsibility involves unboxing CKD cases according to the applicable unboxing guidelines. Parts must then be inspected, with defects reported to the team leader. Materials also need to be correctly racked and placed in their respective material-handling equipment.
There are situations where parts may be missing or damaged and replacements are needed to maintain assembly continuity. In such cases, the technician may be required to carry out the authorised process of robbing parts in accordance with the relevant parts discrepancy report.
The position also supports the sequential feeding of parts to the assembly line according to the assembly schedule. This means the technician has an important role in helping production continue smoothly. Where logistics-related delays arise, the technician is expected to provide real-time responses within the facility.
After the relevant work has been completed, the technician may carry out a post-mortem to confirm that all parts have been consumed and prepare reports where discrepancies are identified. MMO and KDQR issues must also be reported to the team leader and supervisor.
Because the work can involve hazardous materials, these materials must be handled appropriately and according to the required procedures. Additional logistics duties may be assigned by the immediate supervisor depending on operational needs.
The educational requirements include completion of secondary school and possession of a valid forklift operator's licence or certification—Class G. Applicants should be capable of working accurately and methodically and must be able to complete paperwork correctly and count stock accurately. Two years of experience in warehouse operations is required.
Welding Technician: Building Strength Into Every Joint
The Welding Technician position is centred on producing strong, structurally sound welds while ensuring that welding work is completed according to the required standards.
The technician may work with several welding processes, including MIG, SMAW, resistance spot welding (RSW) and TIG. Whichever process is being used, the objective is to produce welds that are correctly sized and free from defects.
Before welding begins, joint preparation needs to be checked. Where preparation does not meet the required standard, the technician is expected to report the issue. Preparing jigs and welding fixtures may also form part of the work, particularly where they are needed for production and welding activities.
Fitting and weld preparation procedures must be carried out according to specified standards as well as assembly or fabrication drawings. The technician therefore needs to understand the technical information provided for a product and use it correctly during the welding process.
Equipment is another important part of the position. Welding equipment must be set up and used correctly, while consumables and tools should be used efficiently. Equipment also needs to be maintained in full operating condition.
The ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings is particularly relevant because the finished product must be welded according to its design.
Quality is built into the role as well. The technician will work according to KVM quality policies, procedures and work instructions and is expected to support quality improvement initiatives. Kaizen principles and standards provided by KVM must be followed, alongside the company's HSE policy and ANZEN principles.
Applicants should have a Diploma or Certificate in welding or a related field and must have completed secondary education. Knowledge of welding best practices and safety procedures is required. The position calls for two years of experience in welding and fabrication, particularly in structural work or the automotive field.
Three Technical Roles With Different Working Priorities
Although the three positions fall within the same broad technical and operational environment, their daily focus is different.
The Paint Technician is concerned with surface preparation, paint application, finishing quality and rework. The Logistics Technician is focused on material movement, stock handling, forklift operations and keeping parts available for production. The Welding Technician concentrates on joining and fabricating components while maintaining weld quality and structural strength.
That distinction matters when choosing which opportunity to pursue. Someone with automotive painting experience will have a very different professional background from a forklift operator or welding technician.
At the same time, there are qualities that run through all three roles. Accuracy matters because mistakes can affect quality, production or material handling. Safety is also a consistent expectation. Each position requires employees to follow workplace safety requirements and established procedures.
Safety Is Part of the Work, Not an Extra
Safety responsibilities appear throughout these opportunities. The Paint Technician is expected to follow safety regulations and participate in safety training. The Logistics Technician must operate the forklift safely, complete pre-shift inspections and handle hazardous materials appropriately. The Welding Technician must work according to safety procedures while using welding equipment and follow KVM's HSE requirements.
The roles therefore require people who can follow instructions and established working practices consistently rather than treating safety as something separate from their normal duties.
Supervisory instructions also form part of the working environment. Paint Technicians, for example, must follow directions regarding which vehicle parts should be restored or replaced and the expected time for the job. Logistics and Welding Technicians may similarly receive additional duties from their supervisors according to operational requirements.
What Applicants Should Take From These Opportunities
These KVM positions are aimed at people with practical technical experience who want to work within an operational environment in Nairobi.
The Paint Technician vacancy requires three years of relevant experience and a Spray Painter Grade III Trade Test, with automotive paint experience preferred. The Logistics Technician role requires two years of warehouse operations experience together with a valid Class G forklift licence or certification. The Welding Technician position requires two years of welding and fabrication experience, with structural or automotive experience relevant to the role.
Applicants should pay close attention to the qualification attached to each position rather than assuming that the three opportunities have the same entry requirements.
For candidates whose experience matches the work involved, these vacancies offer different routes into technical and operational work. Whether the strength lies in creating a quality vehicle finish, keeping production materials moving or producing reliable welds, each role contributes to the wider production process in its own way.
