Water Systems Operator

Job Summary

The Water Systems Operator will be responsible for the reliable operation of water production, pumping, treatment, and distribution systems at assigned sites. The role involves operating equipment, keeping accurate operational records, and supporting maintenance activities to help maintain uninterrupted water services. The position reports to the Technical Officer.

Key Responsibilities

Water Production and Pump Operations

• Operate boreholes, pumps, water treatment equipment, and solar systems.

• Record pumping hours, water flow, and system pressure readings.

Water Treatment and Quality Support

• Monitor chlorine dosing and ensure tanks and systems are kept clean and hygienic.

• Assist with water quality sampling activities.

System Monitoring and Maintenance

• Inspect equipment regularly and immediately report any faults.

• Carry out minor maintenance and repairs as directed by the Technical Officer.

• Assist with scheduled preventive maintenance and emergency repair activities.

Distribution Support

• Identify and report water leaks, bursts, and illegal connections.

• Assist with meter inspections and valve operations.

Reporting

• Maintain accurate daily operational logs.

• Submit required operational information and data.

Qualifications and Requirements

Academic Qualifications

• Ability to use smartphones and mobile data collection tools to record field information.

• Good technical ability and understanding of water system equipment.

• High levels of integrity, discipline, reliability, and consistency in following procedures.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy when monitoring systems and preparing reports.

Engineering Intern

Job Summary

The Engineering Intern will report to the Technical Officer and work closely with the Water Mission Kenya Senior Engineer. The intern will support engineering field assessments, design activities, preparation of Bills of Quantities, water supply extensions, and operation and maintenance work.

The role will involve receiving customer applications, conducting field assessments using the mWater App, entering collected information into hydraulic models with the Senior Engineer to assess connection feasibility, determining material requirements, and following up with the technical team to ensure connections are completed satisfactorily.

The position is based in Makindu, with regular field visits to Kambu, Muthingini, Sultan Hamud, Mutyambua, Kinyongo, Kwa Kavisi, and other locations.

This is a one-year unpaid and non-renewable internship. Water Mission Waterworks LTD will cover field-related expenses.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct field assessments for customer applications using the mWater App, collecting GPS information and other required data in accordance with engineering standards.

• Work with the WMK Senior Engineer to enter field data into the hydraulic model and determine whether customers can be served through the existing water supply system.

• Make recommendations based on the results of the hydraulic assessment.

• Prepare material schedules and cost estimates for customers in consultation with the WMK Senior Engineer.

• Once customers have paid for the required materials, work with the Senior Engineer and Technical Officer to facilitate satisfactory completion of the connection.

• Following connection, assist the Senior Engineer in updating as-built drawings.

• Work with Customer Service to activate customer meters.

• Perform any other duties assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

Academic Requirements

• Proficiency in office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Skills in drafting and modelling software, including AutoCAD, EPANET, PowerCADD, SolidWorks, or ProE.

• Strong integrity and stewardship when handling organizational resources.

• Ability to use smartphones and mobile data collection tools for field data recording.

• Strong analytical, process design, project planning, and project management abilities.

• Detail-oriented approach with strong planning and adherence to standards.

• Excellent spoken and written English.

• Willingness and ability to travel for field assignments.

Community Development Intern

Job Summary

The Community Development Intern will report to the Managing Director and work closely with the Technical Officer, Customer Service Officer, and Water Mission Kenya Community Development Officer.

The intern will support the identification and assessment of potential customers and communities that may benefit from pipeline extensions. The role will also involve community engagement, coordination with Safe Water Committees, stakeholder engagement, and supporting technical teams in addressing community development needs during project implementation.

The position is based in Makindu, with regular visits to Kambu, Muthingini, Sultan Hamud, Mutyambua, Kinyongo, Kwa Kavisi, and other areas.

This is a one-year unpaid and non-renewable internship. Water Mission Waterworks LTD will cover field-related expenses.

• Assist the Customer Service Officer in processing and following up on household water connection applications.

• Participate in field assessments for proposed connections and routine monitoring visits.

• Work with Safe Water Committees and the Community Development Officer to identify potential areas for expansion.

• Participate in relevant community meetings and training activities.

• Support engagement with government representatives, community leaders, water vendors, and other stakeholders to address service delivery concerns.

• Record and follow up on community concerns, complaints, and agreed action points.

• Provide updates on the progress of community-related activities.

• Prepare meeting minutes, field reports, and other required project documentation.

• Carry out any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
