Controllership Accountant at Deloitte Consulting
About this role
This position is suited to an experienced accounting professional who can work across several areas of finance while maintaining a high level of accuracy and professionalism. The role covers general ledger activities, fixed assets, financial close, statutory requirements, staff debtors, reporting, audits, and accounting governance.
The Accounting Records Behind the Business
One of the central responsibilities of the position is ensuring that the General Ledger remains accurate and complete.
The Controllership Accountant will work with journal entries throughout the accounting cycle. This includes preparing, reviewing, and processing entries relating to accruals, provisions, reallocations, adjustments, and period-end accounting activities.
Rather than simply recording transactions, the accountant will also monitor the ledger for discrepancies. When differences or accounting issues are identified, they will need to be investigated and resolved within the required timeframe.
The role also requires attention to the relationship between the General Ledger and supporting sub-ledgers. Updates to the General Ledger must remain properly aligned with the detailed records supporting the company's financial information.
Maintaining this connection between accounting records will be an important part of ensuring that financial information remains reliable.
Following an Asset From Purchase to Disposal
Fixed assets form another significant part of the position.
The accountant will oversee the Fixed Asset Register and maintain the related asset master data. This requires accurate records of the company's assets and appropriate accounting treatment throughout their lifecycle.
Capital expenditure transactions will be reviewed to ensure that assets are classified and capitalized correctly. The role also covers depreciation, impairment, disposal, and recognition of proceeds arising from asset sales.
The Fixed Asset Register will need to be reconciled against the General Ledger. The accountant will also validate GIS asset records and related reporting.
This part of the job requires careful attention because asset information needs to remain consistent across the different accounting and reporting records.
When the Accounting Period Comes to an End
Financial close activities will be another major part of the position.
The Controllership Accountant will support period-end and year-end accounting activities involving the General Ledger, SAP Finance, revenue, and reporting systems.
The accountant will also prepare accounting communications connected with the close process. Keeping relevant stakeholders informed about deadlines and required activities will help ensure that financial reporting tasks are completed within the required periods.
Balance sheet reconciliations will be prepared as part of the reporting process. The position will also contribute to the preparation of statutory financial statements.
Another responsibility is managing the financial close calendar. This involves communicating key timelines and deliverables so that the people involved in the close process understand what needs to be completed and when.
Compliance Is Part of the Daily Work
The role extends beyond internal accounting records to statutory and regulatory requirements.
The Controllership Accountant will manage statutory filings and remittances and ensure that these activities comply with regulatory requirements.
The accountant will also coordinate engagements, audits, and reviews involving statutory and regulatory bodies. This requires preparation, organization, and accurate financial documentation.
Internal and external auditors may require schedules and supporting records during their work. The accountant will support these requirements by preparing the necessary documentation and information.
This means the position requires someone who takes accounting procedures and compliance requirements seriously and consistently follows established processes.
Managing Staff Debtor Accounts
Staff debtors will also fall under the accountant's responsibilities.
The position involves handling accounting and reconciliation activities relating to staff debtor balances. Journal processing and allocations will form part of this work, together with payroll deductions where applicable.
These activities require accurate recording and reconciliation so that staff-related balances remain properly reflected in the accounting records.
The Person Connecting Local Finance Matters
The Controllership Accountant will serve as the primary finance contact for in-country accounting matters.
This gives the position responsibility for helping address accounting matters within the country and ensuring that established accounting processes are followed.
The accountant will also create and maintain reporting templates, reporting repositories, and ad hoc analyses. These tools can support the preparation and organization of financial information needed for reporting and accounting activities.
The ability to analyze financial information will therefore be important, particularly where the accountant needs to examine complex data and present useful information to stakeholders.
Working With Senior Finance Leadership
The position includes direct communication with senior finance leadership.
Regular updates will be provided to the CFO and the Regional Controllership Manager regarding accounting movements and important General Ledger matters.
The accountant will also participate in regional controllership forums, training sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives. These activities support consistency in accounting practices and provide opportunities to share knowledge across the controllership function.
Following established accounting policies, controls, and standardized processes will remain an ongoing responsibility.
What You Need to Bring to the Position
The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
A professional accounting qualification such as CPA or ACCA is preferred.
Experience is also an important requirement. Candidates should have at least five years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience.
The position requires deep knowledge of IFRS, making an understanding of international financial reporting requirements important for the accounting and reporting activities involved.
Applicants should also be proficient in ERP systems such as SAP or SAGE. Experience working with these systems will support the responsibilities involving financial records, reporting, and accounting processes.
More Than Numbers
Technical accounting knowledge is only one part of the position.
The Controllership Accountant needs strong analytical ability to examine and interpret complex financial data. The role involves reviewing transactions, resolving discrepancies, reconciling accounts, managing reporting information, and supporting financial statements.
Communication is also important because the accountant will interact with senior finance leaders, auditors, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders.
Good stakeholder management skills will help the accountant handle these interactions professionally and ensure that accounting matters are communicated clearly.
Professional ethics and integrity are equally important requirements. The position deals directly with financial information, accounting records, compliance, controls, and reporting, making professional conduct an important part of the work.
A Role Built Around Financial Control
The Controllership Accountant brings several accounting functions together rather than focusing on only one area.
On one side, the position involves detailed accounting work such as journal entries, reconciliations, fixed assets, staff debtors, and General Ledger maintenance. On another, it involves financial reporting, statutory compliance, audit support, and communication with finance leadership.
The role also connects local accounting activities with regional controllership processes through forums, training, standardized procedures, and reporting.
For an experienced accounting professional, the position therefore involves a broad range of responsibilities requiring technical accounting knowledge, financial reporting experience, analytical ability, communication, and attention to established controls.
The main focus remains the integrity of financial information. From maintaining the General Ledger and Fixed Asset Register to supporting financial close, statutory reporting, audits, and in-country accounting matters, the Controllership Accountant will help ensure that financial processes are properly carried out and that accounting information is accurately maintained in line with IFRS and established company policies.
