About this role
Senior Accountant Job in Nairobi
A Senior Accountant position is available in Nairobi for an experienced finance professional who can take responsibility for accounting activities across multiple East African entities. The position covers Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and involves working with finance teams at both regional and group level.
The role sits within a wider finance structure, with the Senior Accountant working closely with the Finance Manager for East Africa, Group Finance and the Shared Services Centre in Marrakech. This makes it a role that goes beyond routine bookkeeping, with the successful professional expected to contribute to financial reporting, compliance, planning and the information used to make business decisions.
Based in Nairobi, the position offers variety in day-to-day responsibilities. The person appointed will need to be comfortable moving between month-end activities, statutory requirements, tax matters, financial analysis and budgeting work while maintaining accurate and transparent financial records.
Where the Role Fits
The Senior Accountant will support the financial operations of entities operating across East Africa. Working across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda means that the role involves dealing with accounting requirements that affect more than one legal entity and coordinating with different finance teams.
Month-end accounting will be an important part of the work. The accountant will help coordinate the activities required to close financial periods and ensure that the relevant information is properly captured and reported.
Financial reporting is another central part of the position. The role is expected to provide useful financial information that helps teams understand business performance and make informed decisions.
This means accuracy matters, but so does the ability to understand what financial information means for the wider business.
Compliance Across Multiple Entities
The position also includes supporting statutory and tax compliance.
Because the role covers entities in different East African markets, the accountant needs experience working with compliance requirements across multiple legal entities. Knowledge of general accounting practices within East Africa is therefore an important part of the desired background.
The successful candidate should ideally have worked with Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda accounting environments. Experience covering more than one of these markets would be particularly relevant to the regional nature of the position.
Maintaining transparent and responsible financial practices will be part of the professional's day-to-day approach.
Budgeting, Forecasting and Business Information
The Senior Accountant will also assist with budgeting and forecasting activities.
These responsibilities require the ability to work with financial information beyond historical reporting. Budgeting and forecasting help teams understand expected performance and plan their activities, while financial reporting provides information about what has already happened.
The person in this position will therefore contribute information that supports planning and decision-making across the business.
A practical approach to problem-solving is important. Financial issues can involve several teams or systems, so the ability to investigate problems and work towards workable solutions will be valuable.
Technology and Financial Systems
Experience with an ERP system is part of the requirements for the position. Candidates should have worked with a platform such as Dynamics 365 or a similar enterprise resource planning system.
Strong Excel skills are also required. The role involves working with financial information, and advanced spreadsheet skills can support analysis, reporting and other accounting activities.
The employer also uses Microsoft Office tools, so strong general proficiency across the Microsoft Office suite is expected. Experience with AI tools is described as highly desirable, adding another element to the technology skills sought for the position.
Professional Background
The position is aimed at an experienced accounting professional rather than someone starting out in finance.
Applicants should hold a degree in Finance, Accounting or a related discipline. A CA, CPA or equivalent professional qualification is also required, together with four to six years of post-qualification experience.
General accounting experience across East Africa is important. Candidates who have worked with entities in Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda will have relevant experience for the regional scope of the role.
Experience supporting statutory and tax compliance across multiple legal entities is another key part of the desired background.
Strong written and spoken English will also be necessary because the position involves communication across different teams and locations.
Previous experience in the travel and tourism industry is not listed as a requirement, but it will be an added advantage.
Nairobi-Based Working Arrangement
The Senior Accountant will be based on-site at the company's Nairobi office and will work on a full-time, permanent basis.
The company operates a 3-2-1 hybrid working model. This means employees work three days from the office and two days from home, with at least one of the office days being Monday or Friday.
The arrangement provides a combination of office-based collaboration and working from home while maintaining regular interaction with the wider finance team.
Benefits and Development
The position also comes with a range of employee benefits and development opportunities.
Employees can access flexible working arrangements, including the ability to work from anywhere for up to four weeks each year. There is also an annual free Intrepid trip, together with discounts available for family members and close friends.
Employees receive five additional days of leave each year for use on Intrepid trips. The company also provides a minimum of 10 weeks of paid parental leave for all parents, alongside other additional leave provisions.
Professional development is supported through e-learning platforms, professional development opportunities and mentor programmes.
There is also 20 hours of volunteer leave each year, which employees can use to support causes that are important to them. An Employee Assistance Program is available as a 24/7 service offering counselling support for employees and their families.
Who This Opportunity Suits
This position is designed for an experienced accountant who can work confidently across regional finance operations and multiple legal entities.
The combination of accounting, compliance, reporting, budgeting and forecasting means the role requires more than technical accounting knowledge. The person appointed will also need to communicate effectively, work with different finance teams and use financial information to support wider business activities.
For a qualified finance professional with four to six years of post-qualification experience, East African accounting exposure, strong Excel skills and experience with ERP systems, the Senior Accountant position provides an opportunity to take on regional responsibilities while working from Nairobi.
