Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing day-to-day accounting activities and ensuring that financial records are accurate, complete, and up to date. Key duties will include:
Manage Accounting Operations
Oversee daily accounting activities and maintain accurate financial records.
Handle month-end closing activities and ensure accounts are properly reconciled.
Prepare financial reports for management and other relevant stakeholders.
Use QuickBooks Online and Excel-based financial models to record, analyze, and report financial information.
Ensure Tax and Statutory Compliance
Ensure the organization meets all applicable tax and statutory reporting requirements in Kenya.
Prepare and submit relevant statutory returns within the required deadlines.
Maintain accurate records relating to VAT, PAYE, WHT, NHIF, and NSSF obligations.
Keep up to date with changes in Kenyan tax regulations and ensure that accounting practices remain compliant.
Manage Payroll
Process monthly payroll accurately and on time.
Ensure payroll deductions and statutory contributions are correctly calculated.
Maintain confidential and accurate payroll records.
Address payroll-related queries and resolve discrepancies where necessary.
Manage Supplier Payments
Review supplier invoices and supporting documentation.
Ensure approved supplier payments are processed accurately and on time.
Maintain proper records of supplier transactions and outstanding balances.
Assist with account reconciliations and follow up on payment-related issues.
Perform Additional Accounting Duties
Support other accounting and finance activities as required.
Assist management with financial analysis and accounting-related information.
Carry out other duties assigned by the supervisor or management.
Contribute to improving accounting procedures and maintaining efficient financial operations.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates should meet the following requirements:
1. Academic and Professional Qualifications
CPA II qualification is required.
A degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field will be an added advantage.
Candidates should have a solid understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
2. Professional Experience
At least 5 years of practical, hands-on accounting experience.
Experience managing day-to-day accounting operations is highly desirable.
Previous experience handling payroll, supplier payments, reconciliations, tax compliance, and financial reporting will be an advantage.
3. Knowledge of Kenyan Tax and Statutory Requirements
The ideal candidate should have strong knowledge of Kenyan tax laws and statutory reporting requirements.
The candidate should be familiar with areas such as:
VAT
PAYE
Withholding Tax (WHT)
NHIF
NSSF
Other applicable statutory obligations
The ability to prepare accurate returns and ensure payments are made within the required deadlines is essential.
4. Accounting Software and Technical Skills
Candidates should be comfortable working with accounting and financial software.
The following skills are required:
Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
Ability to create and work with Excel-based financial models.
Strong data analysis and reconciliation skills.
Ability to prepare accurate financial reports and summaries.
Experience with additional accounting or payroll systems will be an added advantage.
5. Analytical Skills
The successful candidate should have strong analytical abilities and be comfortable working with financial information.
This includes the ability to:
Review and interpret financial data.
Identify errors or inconsistencies in accounting records.
Perform account reconciliations.
Analyze financial information and identify trends or issues.
Prepare accurate reports for decision-making.
Investigate discrepancies and recommend appropriate solutions.
6. Organizational Skills
Accounting involves handling multiple deadlines and responsibilities. The successful candidate should therefore be highly organized and able to manage competing priorities effectively.
The candidate should be able to:
Meet tax and statutory deadlines.
Maintain accurate financial records.
Organize invoices, receipts, payroll information, and other supporting documents.
Prioritize tasks effectively.
Work independently while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Keep financial information confidential and secure.
7. Communication Skills
Excellent communication skills are important because the role involves working with management, employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
The successful candidate should be able to:
Communicate financial information clearly.
Respond professionally to accounting and payroll queries.
Explain financial issues in a simple and understandable manner.
Work effectively with colleagues and external parties.
Provide timely updates on financial matters and outstanding issues.
