Junior Accountant
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated, organized and detail-focused Junior Accountant to join our Nairobi team. The successful candidate will assist in maintaining reliable financial records across several companies and accounts.
The role will cover daily transaction processing, bank and M-PESA reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, inventory accounting, expense tracking, statutory compliance and financial record management.
This opportunity is suited to an early-career accounting professional with a good understanding of accounting principles who wants to gain practical experience in a structured environment involving multiple companies and inventory operations.
The organization uses an integrated ERP platform for accounting, inventory and operational activities. Experience with accounting or ERP software is beneficial, although training on the company’s systems and procedures will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting and Reconciliation
Capture and verify daily financial transactions in the ERP system.
Reconcile bank accounts, M-PESA, cash and other financial accounts.
Maintain accurate accounts payable and accounts receivable records.
Record and reconcile transactions between companies and internal fund transfers.
Ensure every transaction is supported by the appropriate invoices, receipts and documentation.
Review expenses and assign them to the correct accounting categories.
Investigate transactions that remain unmatched, unreconciled or incorrectly recorded.
Assist with monthly financial closing and reconciliation processes.
Support the preparation of accounting and management reports.
Inventory Accounting and Control
Maintain proper accounting records relating to inventory within the ERP system.
Compare ERP inventory records with supporting documentation and physical stock counts.
Participate in scheduled stocktaking and inventory verification activities.
Review inventory receipts, transfers, usage and adjustments to ensure they are accurately captured.
Investigate differences between physical stock and system records and support their resolution.
Assist with inventory valuation and ensure stock-related transactions are accurately reflected in the accounts.
Monitor inventory adjustments, damaged goods, write-offs and other movements that require accounting review.
Work with operations and inventory teams to resolve stock differences and strengthen inventory record accuracy.
Escalate material or repeated inventory variances to management.
Tax and Statutory Compliance
Support the accounting and tax processes relating to VAT, PAYE and other statutory obligations.
Keep up to date with changes in Kenyan tax legislation, accounting regulations and statutory requirements affecting the business.
Inform management about relevant regulatory updates, filing deadlines and potential implications.
Maintain complete supporting records for statutory submissions and compliance activities.
Systems, Controls and Documentation
Keep digital accounting records and supporting documents properly organized.
Record assigned accounting activities and timesheets within the ERP system.
Adhere to established accounting procedures, internal controls and authorization processes.
Identify unusual transactions or accounting discrepancies and escalate them appropriately.
Provide support to external accountants and auditors when required.
Carry out other accounting and administrative responsibilities assigned as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
Degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration or a related field.
CPA qualification or ongoing CPA studies, ACCA qualification or ongoing ACCA studies, or another recognized equivalent professional accounting qualification.
2–3 years of relevant accounting experience.
Good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping and general ledger accounting.
Knowledge of bank and account reconciliation procedures.
Understanding of accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
Knowledge of inventory accounting and stock reconciliation.
Familiarity with Kenyan tax and statutory accounting requirements.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
Previous experience using accounting software or an ERP system is an advantage.
