Junior Architectural Designer
Job Summary
Southern Land Company is seeking a full-time Junior Architectural Designer to join its team in Nashville, Tennessee. The successful candidate will support the design and documentation of high-end speculative and custom residences, as well as smaller commercial buildings developed within Southern Land Company communities and other projects.
This position provides an opportunity to strengthen architectural documentation and construction knowledge while working under close supervision. A key focus will be developing expertise in construction documents for wood-frame structures, maintaining AutoCAD standards, and applying architectural quality-control procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare architectural documentation for upscale custom and speculative homes and small commercial projects.
Develop clear and concise builder sets that preserve the client or designer’s intended vision while meeting established schedules and project budgets.
Apply company architectural standards, policies, and procedures throughout the design and documentation process.
Conduct initial quality reviews of completed work to identify errors and maintain documentation standards.
Assist in updating and maintaining the company’s Single-Family Residential AutoCAD standards library.
Coordinate with architecture, homebuilding, landscape architecture, sales, interior design, and marketing teams to promote effective project communication.
Stay informed about building codes and zoning requirements applicable to residential design and construction.
Develop and maintain an understanding of construction costs for various residential building components.
Monitor current residential architecture and design trends and incorporate relevant industry knowledge into project work.
Provide recommendations for exterior materials and color selections when requested.
Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive company, project, or client information.
Required Skills and Abilities
Proficiency with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite CS5 or newer, and SketchUp or comparable rendering software.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Professional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with clients, vendors, and colleagues.
Excellent organization and time-management capabilities.
Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, initiative, and a sense of urgency.
Ability to manage several projects and bring assignments to completion.
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Ability to prioritize responsibilities and seek clarification when requirements are unclear.
Ability to perform effectively under tight deadlines and in an environment involving frequent interruptions, changes, delays, or unexpected issues.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a related discipline from an accredited institution plus 1–3 years of relevant experience; or
Associate degree in a related field plus at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Background in single-family residential architecture or Traditional Neighborhood Design.
Knowledge of historically accurate residential architectural styles and detailing.
Understanding of current single-family home design trends.
