Tax and Audit Accountant Job Description
1. Job Summary
The Tax and Audit Accountant is responsible for ensuring the organization's compliance with Kenyan tax laws and statutory regulations by preparing and filing tax returns, maintaining accurate tax records, supporting audit activities, and providing professional tax advisory services. The role involves managing tax compliance processes, preparing financial reconciliations, supporting internal and external audits, and maintaining effective communication with regulatory authorities, including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
The successful candidate will have practical experience using the KRA iTax system, preparing VAT and corporate income tax returns, supporting audit assignments, and ensuring statutory obligations are fulfilled accurately and within the required timelines. The position requires excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, integrity, and the ability to work independently while maintaining compliance with accounting standards and tax regulations.
2. Key Duties and Responsibilities
2.1 Tax Compliance
The successful candidate will:
Prepare and file Value Added Tax (VAT) returns through the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iTax system.
Prepare and file corporate income tax returns accurately and within statutory deadlines.
Ensure compliance with all applicable Kenyan tax laws and regulations.
Verify the accuracy of tax computations before submission.
Monitor statutory filing deadlines and ensure timely submission of all tax returns.
Maintain compliance with all tax reporting requirements.
2.2 Tax Account Reconciliation
The Tax and Audit Accountant will:
Reconcile tax accounts regularly to ensure accuracy.
Investigate and resolve tax-related discrepancies.
Review tax balances and ensure they agree with accounting records.
Maintain accurate tax reconciliation schedules.
Support month-end and year-end tax reconciliations.
Report unresolved tax issues to management.
2.3 Tax Records Management
The employee will:
Maintain complete and accurate tax records.
Organize supporting documentation for all tax filings.
Ensure tax records are readily available for audit and regulatory review.
Maintain confidentiality of tax information.
Archive tax documentation in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
2.4 Audit Support
The successful candidate will:
Support internal and external audit assignments.
Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
Respond to audit queries promptly and accurately.
Assist auditors in accessing financial and tax records.
Implement audit recommendations where assigned.
Monitor corrective actions arising from audit findings.
2.5 Regulatory Compliance
The Tax and Audit Accountant will:
Liaise with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and other regulatory agencies.
Respond to tax assessments and regulatory inquiries.
Monitor changes in tax legislation and statutory requirements.
Advise management on tax compliance obligations.
Ensure the organization complies with all applicable statutory regulations.
2.6 Tax Planning
The employee will:
Assist in developing tax planning strategies.
Identify opportunities for lawful tax savings.
Support implementation of approved tax compliance strategies.
Analyze the tax impact of business transactions.
Provide recommendations that improve tax efficiency while maintaining compliance.
2.7 Financial Reporting
The successful candidate will:
Assist in preparing financial reports.
Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes.
Prepare accounting reconciliations.
Verify financial information relating to tax accounts.
Support management reporting requirements.
2.8 Documentation and Record Management
The Tax and Audit Accountant will:
Maintain accurate accounting and tax documentation.
Update financial records regularly.
Prepare reports required by management.
Ensure documentation complies with accounting standards and company policies.
Maintain proper filing systems for easy retrieval of information.
2.9 Continuous Improvement

3. Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognized institution.
CPA Part II qualification or active progression toward CPA completion.
Membership in a recognized professional accounting body will be an added advantage.
4. Work Experience
The ideal candidate should have:
A minimum of two (2) years of practical experience in taxation, accounting, or auditing.
Hands-on experience using the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iTax system.
Practical experience preparing and filing VAT and corporate income tax returns.
Experience supporting internal and external audit assignments.
Experience working in a busy accounting firm or corporate finance department will be an added advantage.
Experience using accounting software and financial reporting systems.
