INTERNAL AUDITOR AND COMPLIANCE CONSULTANT
About the Role
Farsight Africa Group is seeking an Internal Auditor and Compliance Consultant to support the organisation in strengthening its operations through a systematic and disciplined approach to risk management, internal controls, and governance processes.
The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing the effectiveness of existing controls, identifying areas of risk, monitoring management interventions, and recommending appropriate measures to reduce exposure and improve operational efficiency.
The position requires strong knowledge of tax and accounting procedures, statutory requirements, and regulatory obligations. The successful candidate will also play an important role in ensuring that the organisation remains compliant with applicable tax requirements and that statutory deductions and filings are accurately prepared and submitted within the required timelines.
The role will involve reviewing financial and tax processes, conducting internal audits, reconciling tax accounts, monitoring statutory remittances, reviewing supplier payments, advising management on changes in tax legislation, and working with both external auditors and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) where necessary.
The successful candidate will also provide guidance and training to the internal finance team on appropriate tax compliance practices and support the development of policies and procedures that reflect changes in tax laws and regulatory requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Internal Audit and Follow-Up Reviews
The Internal Auditor and Compliance Consultant will support the organisation’s internal audit activities by reviewing controls, identifying weaknesses, and following up on agreed management actions.
Key responsibilities include:
Conducting follow-up audits to assess whether management interventions have been implemented effectively.
Reviewing actions taken by management in response to identified audit findings.
Monitoring the implementation of agreed corrective measures.
Identifying areas where existing controls may not be sufficiently effective.
Assessing operational processes to identify potential weaknesses and areas of exposure.
Recommending appropriate measures to reduce identified risks.
Identifying opportunities for cost savings and improved operational efficiency.
Providing recommendations aimed at strengthening internal controls and improving business processes.
Determining the appropriate scope of internal audit assignments.
Developing annual internal audit plans based on identified risks and organisational requirements.
Applying a systematic and disciplined approach when assessing risk management, controls, and governance processes.
The role requires the ability to examine processes objectively and identify practical measures that can strengthen the organisation’s overall control environment.
2. Tax Compliance and Statutory Requirements
The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing and supporting compliance with applicable tax and statutory obligations.
Responsibilities include:
Reviewing statutory deductions and filings to confirm their accuracy and compliance.
Ensuring that relevant statutory obligations are appropriately accounted for and submitted within the required timelines.
Reviewing compliance relating to PAYE.
Reviewing VAT compliance and related filings.
Reviewing withholding tax deductions and submissions.
Reviewing NHIF-related statutory deductions and compliance.
Reviewing NSSF deductions and related statutory obligations.
Reviewing corporate tax compliance.
Identifying potential gaps or errors in statutory deductions and filings.
Recommending corrective action where discrepancies or compliance gaps are identified.
The candidate should maintain a strong understanding of applicable tax and statutory requirements and ensure that the organisation’s financial and tax processes are appropriately aligned with those requirements.
3. Finance System and Tax Treatment Reviews
Conduct periodic reviews of the finance system to confirm that transactions receive the appropriate tax treatment.
Key responsibilities include:
Reviewing financial transactions to confirm that the appropriate tax treatment has been applied.
Conducting periodic assessments of the finance system.
Identifying transactions where tax treatment may require correction or clarification.
Reviewing accounting processes from a tax compliance perspective.
Identifying potential tax risks arising from financial transactions.
Recommending appropriate adjustments where required.
Supporting accurate and compliant financial processing.
The position requires a thorough understanding of accounting and taxation processes to ensure that financial transactions are appropriately treated for tax purposes.
4. Tax Account Reconciliation and Remittances
Monitor tax accounts and ensure that tax obligations are properly reconciled and remitted.
Responsibilities include:
Reconciling tax accounts regularly.
Reviewing tax balances and identifying outstanding items.
Verifying that tax remittances have been made accurately.
Confirming that tax payments are submitted within the required timelines.
Investigating discrepancies identified during tax account reconciliations.
Supporting the resolution of outstanding tax-related items.
Maintaining appropriate oversight of tax remittances and related records.
Effective tax reconciliation will help ensure that the organisation maintains accurate tax records and meets its statutory obligations on time.
5. Supplier Payment and Withholding Tax Review
Review supplier payments to confirm compliance with withholding tax requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
Reviewing supplier payments for applicable withholding tax obligations.
Confirming that appropriate withholding tax has been identified and applied.
Reviewing the treatment of supplier transactions for tax compliance.
Identifying potential withholding tax errors or omissions.
Recommending corrective measures where required.
Supporting appropriate documentation and reporting relating to withholding tax.
The candidate should ensure that supplier-related payments are reviewed consistently and that applicable withholding tax requirements are properly addressed.
6. Tax Law and Regulatory Updates
Monitor changes in tax legislation and provide relevant guidance to the organisation.
Responsibilities include:
Keeping up to date with changes in tax laws and regulatory requirements.
Advising management on relevant changes in tax legislation.
Identifying areas where changes in tax requirements may affect existing processes.
Recommending timely updates to company policies and procedures.
Supporting the organisation in maintaining appropriate tax compliance practices.
Ensuring that relevant internal processes reflect applicable tax and regulatory changes.
The role requires continued awareness of tax developments to ensure that the organisation can respond appropriately to changes in its regulatory obligations.
7. Tax Compliance Reporting
Provide regular reporting on the organisation’s tax compliance position.
Key responsibilities include:
Preparing quarterly reports on Farsight Africa Group’s overall tax compliance status.
Providing an overview of relevant tax compliance activities.
Highlighting identified issues, risks, or areas requiring attention.
Reporting on outstanding tax matters and relevant corrective actions.
Providing management with information required to monitor tax compliance effectively.
Ensuring that compliance reports are accurate and provided within the required timelines.
8. External Auditors and KRA Engagement
Support communication and coordination with external parties on tax-related matters.
Responsibilities include:
Liaising with external auditors on relevant tax matters when required.
Liaising with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on tax-related matters when necessary.
Providing relevant financial and tax information to authorised external parties.
Supporting the resolution and clarification of tax-related issues.
Ensuring that communication with external stakeholders is professional, accurate, and appropriately documented.
9. Finance Team Training and Guidance
Support the development of the internal finance team through guidance and training on tax compliance.
Key responsibilities include:
Training internal finance staff on tax compliance best practices.
Providing guidance on appropriate tax procedures.
Supporting the finance team in understanding relevant tax requirements.
Sharing updates on changes in tax laws and reporting requirements.
Promoting consistent application of tax compliance practices across the finance function.
Providing practical guidance where tax compliance issues arise.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
10. Academic and Professional Qualifications
The successful candidate should possess:
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
A Certified Public Accountant qualification (CPA-K) or an equivalent professional accounting qualification.
11. Professional Experience
The candidate should have:
A minimum of five years’ experience in tax compliance and financial audit.
Experience gained within corporate organisations or consulting firms is preferably desirable.
Practical experience conducting financial audits and reviewing tax compliance.
Experience working with statutory deductions, tax filings, reconciliations, and related financial compliance activities.
12. Technical Knowledge and Skills
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
In-depth knowledge of KRA tax laws.
Strong understanding of applicable tax compliance requirements.
Familiarity with KRA reporting systems, including iTax.
Strong knowledge of accounting and tax procedures.
Strong analytical skills.
Strong problem-solving capabilities.
Ability to identify financial and tax-related risks.
Ability to develop practical recommendations for addressing identified risks and compliance gaps.
