Multi-Skilled Carpenter
Role Purpose
The Multi-Skilled Carpenter is responsible for carrying out high-quality carpentry, joinery, cabinetry, and masonry works across residential properties, office buildings, workshops, stores, and other facilities within the estate. The role ensures that all construction, refurbishment, maintenance, and repair works are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with organizational standards, industry best practices, British Standards, and Kenyan building regulations.
Working closely with the Technical Works Group (TWG), the Multi-Skilled Carpenter performs planned preventive maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault diagnosis, inspections, and minor construction projects while supporting health and safety compliance, fleet operations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Carpentry, Joinery and Building Maintenance
The Multi-Skilled Carpenter is responsible for delivering quality carpentry and joinery services across the estate.
Key responsibilities include:
Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance works.
Construct, install, repair, and replace wooden structures, fixtures, and fittings.
Undertake refurbishment, renovation, and remodeling projects.
Install and repair doors, windows, partitions, cabinets, shelving, roofing timber, ceilings, and other wooden structures.
Perform stain-grade trim work and install door hardware.
Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders.
Prepare cost-effective solutions for minor construction projects.
Ensure all work meets required quality standards and building regulations.
Diagnose structural defects and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
Complete assigned work within agreed timelines.
2. Carpentry Equipment and Workshop Operations
The role ensures the safe operation and maintenance of carpentry equipment.
Responsibilities include:
Operate both manual and power tools safely and efficiently.
Set up and perform basic maintenance on woodworking machinery.
Utilize lathes, drill presses, planers, sanders, and shaping equipment.
Inspect tools and equipment before and after use.
Report damaged or defective equipment promptly.
Maintain tools in clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
Ensure proper storage and security of tools and equipment.
3. Masonry and Civil Works
The Multi-Skilled Carpenter performs minor masonry and civil maintenance works.
Responsibilities include:
Carry out minor masonry repairs and maintenance.
Repair damaged walls, floors, pathways, ridges, and concrete surfaces.
Restore deteriorated masonry structures.
Seal roofing valleys and perform cement repairs.
Undertake minor bricklaying and block work.
Support small civil works and building modification projects.
Collaborate with other technical staff during construction and maintenance activities.
Ensure all masonry work complies with approved standards and specifications.
4. Planned Preventive Maintenance and Asset Care
The role supports proactive maintenance of buildings and facilities.
Responsibilities include:
Perform routine inspections of buildings and infrastructure.
Conduct preventive maintenance activities according to maintenance schedules.
Identify maintenance defects before they become major failures.
Record maintenance activities accurately.
Recommend improvements that extend the lifespan of facilities and equipment.
Maintain high standards of workmanship throughout all maintenance activities.
5. Health, Safety and Compliance
The Multi-Skilled Carpenter promotes a safe working environment and compliance with health and safety requirements.
Responsibilities include:
Comply with all health, safety, and environmental policies.
Read and implement risk assessments and safe work procedures.
Wear and maintain appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Safely erect and inspect scaffolding for approved working heights.
Maintain safe housekeeping practices within work areas.
Report hazards, incidents, and unsafe conditions promptly.
Ensure work complies with British Standards, Kenyan building regulations, and organizational procedures.
6. Materials and Inventory Management
The role ensures responsible use and management of construction materials.
Responsibilities include:
Receive, safeguard, and utilize issued materials responsibly.
Minimize material wastage during construction and maintenance activities.
Return unused materials to stores with appropriate documentation.
Maintain accountability for tools, materials, and equipment assigned.
Support inventory verification and stock management activities.
7. Teamwork and Cross-Functional Support
The Multi-Skilled Carpenter collaborates with other trades to ensure successful project delivery.
Responsibilities include:
Work closely with electricians, plumbers, painters, masons, and other technicians.
Support multidisciplinary maintenance and construction projects.
Assist with emergency maintenance responses.
Share technical knowledge and support junior artisans where required.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within the maintenance team.
8. Driving and Operational Support
The role provides transport and logistical support where required.
Responsibilities include:
Drive official vehicles for transportation of personnel, tools, and materials.
Deliver construction materials and equipment safely across the estate.
Ensure assigned vehicles are clean and maintained.
Conduct routine vehicle inspections before use.
Report vehicle defects promptly.
Ensure vehicles are parked securely after daily assignments.
Comply with organizational transport policies and road safety regulations.
Academic Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
Grade I Trade Test Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
Grade III Trade Test Certificate in Masonry from a recognized institution.
Artisan or Craft Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery will be an added advantage.
Artisan Certificate in Masonry or related building trades is desirable.
Additional training in Civil Works, Fire Safety, First Aid, or Occupational Health and Safety will be an added advantage.
Required Experience
The ideal candidate should demonstrate:
A minimum of four (4) years of practical experience in carpentry, joinery, and cabinetry.
At least two (2) years of hands-on experience in masonry and minor civil works.
Experience performing building maintenance, refurbishment, and construction projects.
Practical experience operating woodworking machinery and hand tools.
Experience reading technical drawings and construction plans.
Experience working at heights and using scaffolding safely.
Basic knowledge of plumbing, painting, electrical, or other building maintenance trades will be an added advantage.
A valid driving license with at least three (3) years of accident-free driving experience.
