CLINICAL OFFICER
1. Key Responsibilities
The Clinical Officer will be responsible for providing appropriate clinical services to patients while supporting the effective delivery of patient care within the hospital. The role involves medical evaluation, treatment, consultation, emergency response, patient education, documentation, and supervision of patient care.
The Clinical Officer is expected to provide professional and timely medical services while ensuring that patient information, medical assessments, treatment plans, and other relevant clinical details are properly documented and maintained.
Medical Evaluation, Treatment and Consultation
Provide medical evaluation and treatment services to patients attending the hospital.
Conduct appropriate consultations with patients based on their presenting medical concerns.
Assess patients and determine appropriate medical care based on their clinical presentation.
Provide appropriate medical advice and consultation within the scope of clinical practice.
Ensure that patients receive appropriate attention and follow-up in relation to their medical needs.
Support the provision of effective and timely clinical services to patients within the hospital.
Emergency Response and Medical Support
Respond promptly to medical emergencies within the hospital.
Provide appropriate clinical attention and support when emergency medical situations arise.
Respond to patients’ medical questions and provide appropriate information and guidance.
Remain available to address urgent patient concerns and provide relevant medical support.
Ensure that emergency and other urgent medical needs are attended to appropriately.
Patient Assessment and Clinical Documentation
Obtain and accurately document the patient’s chief complaint and presenting medical concern.
Obtain and record the patient’s past medical history.
Collect and document relevant family and social history.
Conduct and document an appropriate review of systems.
Perform the required clinical examination and document the findings accurately.
Record the patient’s current medications.
Document known allergies and other relevant medical information.
Complete an appropriate clinical assessment based on the information obtained during the patient evaluation.
Develop and document an appropriate plan for patient management and care.
Ensure that patient records contain relevant and accurate clinical information to support ongoing care.
Medical Orders and Treatment Support
Provide appropriate medical orders for prescription refills within the scope of practice.
Provide orders relating to the administration of medications as required.
Provide appropriate referrals for patients who require further assessment, treatment, or specialised care.
Ensure that medication-related instructions and referrals are appropriately documented.
Support continuity of patient care through appropriate treatment orders and referrals.
Patient Education
Provide patients with appropriate education relating to their medical care.
Explain relevant information regarding treatment, medications, referrals, and other aspects of patient management as required.
Respond to patient questions and provide information that assists patients in understanding their care.
Ensure that patients receive appropriate information to support their understanding of their medical needs and care arrangements.
Supervision of Patient Care
Supervise patient care within the hospital.
Monitor the provision of care to patients and support appropriate clinical management.
Remain available to patients to answer questions regarding their care.
Provide patients with relevant information and clarification concerning their treatment and care.
Relay appropriate information regarding patient care as required.
Support effective communication between patients and the healthcare team.
Ensure that patient care is appropriately coordinated within the hospital.
2. Professional Practice
The Clinical Officer will be expected to perform all assigned clinical responsibilities professionally and within the appropriate scope of practice. The role requires effective interaction with patients and the ability to provide medical evaluation, treatment, consultation, emergency response, documentation, and patient support.
The successful candidate should be able to work effectively in a busy hospital environment and respond appropriately to different patient needs and clinical situations.
The position requires careful attention to patient information and clinical documentation. Accurate recording of the patient’s history, examination findings, medications, allergies, assessment, and management plan is an important part of the role and supports effective continuity of care.
The Clinical Officer will also be required to remain accessible to patients, particularly when they have questions or require clarification regarding their care. Effective communication and patient education are therefore important elements of the position.
3. Minimum Requirements
Academic Qualification
The candidate must possess:
A Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognised institution.
The required academic qualification must be obtained from a recognised and appropriate training institution.
Professional Registration
The candidate must:
Be a registered officer with the Clinical Officers Council.
Maintain valid professional registration as required for practice.
Possess a valid practice licence.
The required registration and licence should be valid at the time of appointment and maintained in accordance with applicable professional requirements.
Computer Skills
Proficiency in computer applications is required.
The candidate should be able to use relevant computer applications effectively in the course of their work.
Computer proficiency will support the effective performance of the role and the management of relevant patient and clinical information.
Work Experience
The candidate should have at least two years of working experience as a Clinical Officer.
The experience should have been gained in a busy hospital environment.
Candidates should have practical experience providing clinical services within a hospital setting.
The required experience should demonstrate familiarity with patient evaluation, treatment, consultation, emergency response, clinical documentation, medication-related orders, referrals, patient education, and supervision of patient care.
4. Candidate Profile
The successful candidate should be appropriately qualified, professionally registered, and licensed to practise as a Clinical Officer. They should have relevant practical experience gained in a busy hospital environment and demonstrate the ability to provide effective clinical services to patients.
The candidate should be capable of assessing patients, documenting relevant clinical information, providing treatment and consultation services, responding to emergencies, and supporting appropriate patient care.
The role also requires the ability to communicate effectively with patients, answer medical questions, provide patient education, and relay relevant information regarding patient care. The candidate should be comfortable working in a hospital environment where timely attention to patient needs and effective clinical support are required.
Overall, the position requires a Clinical Officer who meets the required academic and professional qualifications, maintains a valid practice licence, has appropriate computer skills, and possesses at least two years of relevant experience working as a Clinical Officer in a busy hospital.
