About the Position
FirstEnergy Service Co., a FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiary, is seeking a State Communications Representative to develop and deliver effective communications for employees, customers, communities, and other stakeholders at the state level.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Communications and collaborate with teams across Operations, External Affairs, Regulatory, Customer Accounts & Local Engagement, Safety, and Corporate Communications. The role requires someone who can provide sound communications advice, develop compelling written content, speak confidently on important issues, and understand the changing media, digital, video, and social landscape.
The position requires initiative, strong judgment, excellent collaboration skills, and the ability to turn complex subjects into straightforward and effective messages, often within demanding timelines.
Key Responsibilities
Employee and Internal Communications
Develop communication programs that keep state employees informed and connected to organizational priorities.
Prepare content for employee portals, leadership communications, safety initiatives, transformation programs, and operational activities.
Convert technical or complicated information into clear internal communications that employees can easily understand.
Assist with executive communications, including presentations, talking points, town hall materials, and internal video content.
Coordinate with Human Resources, Operations, Safety, and Corporate Communications to ensure internal messages are delivered accurately and on time.
External Communications and Media Relations
Act as a Public Information Officer during relevant events.
Represent the company as a media spokesperson and communicate key messages effectively while protecting FirstEnergy’s public reputation.
Participate in the after-hours media rotation and assist with communications during outages, emergencies, and other critical situations.
Prepare press releases, media statements, talking points, briefings, and related external materials.
Identify potential news stories and assist with media pitching activities that enhance the company’s reputation.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with local journalists and media organizations.
Monitor developing issues and help prepare communications concerning outages, community activities, and emerging matters.
Customer and Community Communications
Develop customer communications covering initiatives such as energy efficiency, smart meter programs, safety information, and operational updates.
Present complicated subjects in simple, customer-friendly language.
Prepare communication materials supporting community events, public meetings, sponsorships, and engagement activities.
Ensure all customer and community messaging remains consistent with company branding and service commitments.
Digital, Social Media and Multimedia
Produce state-specific digital content for websites, social platforms, video scripts, and visual communication channels.
Make effective use of emerging communication technologies, including AI-supported content tools, digital platforms, and modern multimedia formats.
Monitor social conversations and media coverage to gather insights that can improve communication strategies.
Help maintain content calendars covering employee, customer, and external communications.
Assist in producing videos, graphics, and other multimedia materials.
Regulatory, Stakeholder and Operational Communications
Support communication activities involving regulatory matters, public open houses, legislative initiatives, and stakeholder concerns.
Work with different departments to maintain consistent messaging across the organization.
Attend community functions, public meetings, and related engagements when required.
Team Collaboration
Work collaboratively with Corporate Communications colleagues to maintain consistent communication standards and messaging.
Contribute to an inclusive, supportive, and high-performing communications environment.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related discipline.
3 to 7 years of professional communications experience covering areas such as internal communications, media relations, digital content, or customer engagement.
Excellent writing and editing abilities, with the flexibility to communicate effectively with different audiences.
Experience using modern communications technologies, including AI-powered content tools, digital communication systems, and evolving multimedia formats.
Strong storytelling ability with a talent for developing engaging and relatable business narratives.
Ability to simplify technical, operational, or complex information for a broad audience.
Proven ability to manage several assignments simultaneously while meeting demanding deadlines.
Familiarity with social media channels, content management systems, and multimedia production.
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Willingness to participate in after-hours, emergency, outage, and other time-sensitive communications activities.
