Communications Coordinator
Location: Silver Spring, Maryland
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $65,000–$90,000 per year

Position Overview
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas is looking for a Communications Coordinator to support its Justice Team in expanding audience engagement around advocacy, social justice, and the Mercy mission.
This position is suited to a communications professional who can transform complicated policy, legislative, and advocacy information into messaging that is understandable, engaging, and capable of motivating people to take action. The successful candidate will help plan communications initiatives, produce content for multiple platforms, and broaden the Justice Team's connections with varied audiences.
Working within a collaborative environment, the Communications Coordinator will help strengthen engagement among Sisters of Mercy, associates and companions, Institute departments, ministries, and external partners while creating resources that encourage participation in justice-related work.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and implement communications strategies supporting Justice Team programs, advocacy campaigns, priorities, and engagement activities.
Produce, coordinate, and manage content for email communications, newsletters, social media, websites, toolkits, and other communication channels.
Turn complex policy, legislative, and advocacy subjects into straightforward and engaging messages suitable for different audiences.
Create and maintain communications schedules that correspond with campaigns, legislative developments, and important opportunities for engagement.
Partner with the Institute Communications team to maintain consistent branding, messaging, and communication standards.
Use audience segmentation and available data to personalize outreach and improve participation.
Measure communication results, including audience reach, engagement, and action rates, and apply findings to strengthen future campaigns.
Support educational initiatives, advocacy activities, public engagement programs, and solidarity efforts connected to Justice Team priorities.
Promote awareness of the Sisters of Mercy's Critical Concerns, including Earth, immigration, nonviolence, racism, and women, along with emerging social justice and legislative issues.
Establish and maintain productive relationships with internal departments, committees, working groups, and external organizations that share similar goals.
Work with colleagues to establish objectives, develop resources, set schedules, and implement strategies that support justice initiatives.
Contribute to a workplace culture focused on collaboration, continuous learning, social analysis, theological reflection, and the Mercy tradition.
Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field and/or 3–5 years of relevant professional communications experience.
Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling abilities, including the ability to adjust communications for different audiences.
Experience planning and managing communications across multiple channels and maintaining content calendars.
Demonstrated experience producing digital communications for social media, email, websites, newsletters, or similar platforms.
Ability to simplify complicated information and present it in an accessible and engaging manner.
Ability to interpret communication data and performance metrics to assess results and improve audience engagement.
Strong organizational, project coordination, and teamwork capabilities.
Ability to manage competing assignments, deadlines, and priorities in a fast-moving collaborative environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with advocacy programs, legislative initiatives, public policy, or social justice campaigns.
Familiarity with email marketing platforms and customer relationship management systems.
Background working for nonprofit, advocacy, faith-based, or other purpose-driven organizations.
Knowledge of social justice initiatives, community engagement, or coalition-focused programs.
Understanding of communications within faith-based environments.
Experience working for a religious organization, particularly a Catholic institution.
Fluency in both English and Spanish.
