SENIOR DATA ENGINEER – SQL & ETL
Position Overview
The International Health Data Engineering function supports the organisation's global health delivery operations by managing a central data integration environment that brings together information from multiple policy administration platforms and distributes it to a wide range of downstream applications and services.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for maintaining and enhancing this data ecosystem. The role will involve developing integration solutions, supporting existing data processes and contributing to the technical approaches and coding standards used for data-driven initiatives.
You will work with colleagues across different technical disciplines, business functions and geographic locations, while having opportunities to introduce new ideas, improve engineering practices and expand your technical capabilities through continuous learning.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to the development, testing and ongoing support of ETL workflows and data integration processes.
Investigate and resolve issues affecting SQL Server databases and related data-processing activities.
Work alongside experienced database developers to understand requirements, develop technical approaches and participate in project discussions and workshops.
Build and maintain T-SQL and SSIS solutions supporting both routine operational requirements and larger project initiatives.
Create and maintain data models, mappings and supporting documentation in collaboration with business and technical stakeholders.
Help determine appropriate approaches for moving, transforming and integrating data between systems.
Support scheduled production releases and monitor automated data-processing jobs to identify and address issues promptly.
Review existing processes and recommend improvements to code quality, development tools, workflows and engineering practices.
Contribute to the reliability and scalability of the organisation's wider data integration environment.
Essential Technical Experience
At least five years of professional experience developing and supporting Microsoft SQL Server solutions.
Advanced proficiency in T-SQL, including the development of complex stored procedures, views and database functions.
Strong understanding of relational database principles, query execution and performance optimisation.
Hands-on experience designing and implementing ETL processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
Understanding of both OLTP and OLAP database environments and their respective use cases.
Strong diagnostic and problem-solving ability, including the confidence to analyse and reverse-engineer complex or unfamiliar code.
Experience working within Agile software development teams and applying Agile delivery practices.
Strong ability to work collaboratively with senior technical colleagues and business stakeholders.
Additional Advantages
The following experience would strengthen the application:
Working knowledge of C# and Python.
Exposure to contemporary data engineering platforms and technologies, including PySpark and Databricks.
Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure, platforms or data services.
Experience using source-control platforms such as Git and working with CI/CD pipelines.
Exposure to AI-enabled software development tools, including GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI or comparable solutions.
Previous experience working with healthcare, health insurance or related industry data.
