The role ensures databases remain available, secure, performant, reliable and capable of being recovered when required. The position also oversees backup and restoration processes, high-availability and disaster-recovery arrangements, database upgrades and lifecycle activities while working closely with other technical teams to maintain resilient database services.
Key Accountabilities:
Database Administration and Maintenance
Install, configure, administer, patch and upgrade approved enterprise database platforms across on-premises and selected cloud environments.
Manage database instances, schemas, storage, system settings, transaction logs, connectivity and database objects.
Carry out routine database health and integrity checks, index maintenance, statistics updates and general housekeeping.
Keep database inventories, configuration information, technical dependencies and operating procedures up to date.
Provide support for database migrations, upgrades, consolidation and modernisation projects.
Performance and Capacity Management
Monitor database availability, performance, workloads, resource consumption and storage expansion.
Diagnose query-performance problems, locking, blocking, deadlocks, connectivity issues and recurring database bottlenecks.
Review execution plans and propose improvements involving queries, indexes, schemas or database configurations.
Establish and maintain performance baselines for critical databases while forecasting compute, memory, storage and connection-capacity requirements.
Work with Systems, Storage and Cloud teams to coordinate infrastructure-capacity needs.
Backup, Restoration and Recovery
Implement and maintain backup and recovery processes according to database criticality, retention requirements and approved Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs).
Manage native database backup, restoration and point-in-time recovery procedures and integrate databases with the organisation’s enterprise backup solution.
Monitor backups, investigate failures and address any identified backup or recoverability deficiencies.
Perform scheduled database restoration and recovery exercises to confirm the integrity, consistency and availability of recovered databases.
Maintain backup schedules, recovery documentation and evidence from restoration and recovery tests.
High Availability and Disaster Recovery
Configure, manage and monitor approved database high-availability, replication and disaster-recovery solutions.
Monitor replication, synchronisation, availability and failover preparedness, resolving technical issues where necessary.
Maintain procedures covering database failover, failback, restoration and recovery for critical services.
Take part in planned database switchovers, failover testing and disaster-recovery exercises.
Verify database availability, integrity, connectivity, scheduled processes and replication after recovery activities.
Compare recovery outcomes against approved RTO and RPO targets and recommend corrective measures where gaps exist.
Coordinate database recovery activities and technical dependencies with Infrastructure, Applications, Network, Backup and Cybersecurity teams.
Database Security and Access
Implement approved database security standards, secure configuration baselines and least-privilege access controls.
Manage database users, roles, privileged accounts, service accounts and database permissions.
Support regular access reviews, vulnerability assessments, security patching and audit-evidence requirements.
Implement approved database auditing, logging and encryption measures in collaboration with Cybersecurity teams.
Identify and escalate unsupported database components, excessive access privileges and significant security risks.
Change, Automation and Lifecycle Management
Assess and implement database changes through established change-management procedures, including validation, rollback and recovery planning.
Create and maintain scripts for automating routine database monitoring, maintenance, backup verification and reporting.
Store and maintain database scripts and configuration files in approved version-control repositories.
Track database platform support lifecycles and plan necessary upgrades, patches, migrations and retirements.
Identify database technical debt and recommend suitable consolidation, migration, upgrade or modernisation initiatives.
Incident and Operational Support
Diagnose and resolve database incidents involving availability, connectivity, performance, corruption, replication and recovery.
Perform root-cause analysis on major or recurring database incidents and implement corrective actions within the assigned responsibilities.
Restore database services in line with approved operational priorities and recovery procedures.
Produce reports covering database health, performance, capacity, backup status and recovery readiness.
Participate in on-call or emergency technical support when required.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a related field.
Relevant professional certifications are advantageous, including Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) where Microsoft SQL Server or Azure SQL is used; Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA); Oracle Database Administration Professional where Oracle is a key platform; EDB PostgreSQL Associate or Professional where PostgreSQL is widely used; recognised certification for the organisation’s enterprise backup and recovery platform; Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) where Azure infrastructure is involved; and current ITIL Foundation certification.
At least 5 years of relevant experience in database administration, enterprise database infrastructure, backup and recovery, high availability and disaster recovery.
Practical experience managing enterprise database platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, with additional exposure to MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB and Redis.
Experience with Oracle backup, recovery, security and high-availability technologies, including RMAN and Transparent Data Encryption (TDE).
Hands-on experience using Commvault for enterprise database backup, restoration and recovery, including scheduled recovery testing and disaster-recovery preparedness.
Experience supporting databases and persistent workloads running on Kubernetes-based container environments, including SUSE Rancher, Portworx and Helm.
Experience using monitoring and observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch and Datadog to track database availability, performance, capacity and infrastructure dependencies.
Experience implementing secure database access and credential-management practices, including integration with enterprise secrets-management platforms such as HashiCorp Vault.
