Job Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing reliable and safe driving services using assigned company vehicles. The role involves transporting authorized staff members, officials, visitors, goods, documents, mail, and other items as required.
The position requires a responsible and careful driver who can ensure the proper use, security, cleanliness, and maintenance of company vehicles. The driver will also be expected to follow assigned routes and schedules, maintain accurate vehicle records, and report any vehicle problems, incidents, or accidents promptly.
The successful candidate will be based in Nairobi and will be required to travel regularly to the Company’s project site in Marsabit. The role may also require travel to other locations from time to time, depending on operational requirements and assigned responsibilities.
Job Details
Vehicle Maintenance and Cleanliness
Maintain company vehicles in clean and presentable condition.
Ensure assigned vehicles receive regular scheduled servicing and maintenance.
Monitor the general condition of the vehicle and ensure it remains suitable for assigned duties.
Ensure that routine maintenance requirements are addressed as scheduled.
Report any vehicle issues that may affect the safe or reliable operation of the vehicle.
Detect and report malfunctioning vehicle systems for appropriate action.
Daily Vehicle Checks
Check the motor oil daily to ensure that it is at the required level.
Check the water and battery water as part of the daily vehicle inspection.
Check tyre pressure to ensure the tyres are in good working condition.
Check the brakes regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.
Ensure that the vehicle is in good working order before undertaking assigned duties.
Identify any issues during daily checks and report them appropriately.
Vehicle Equipment and Documents
Ensure that vehicles are equipped with all necessary tools before leaving for any duty.
Ensure all required vehicle documents are available and properly maintained.
Check that the vehicle has the necessary items required for assigned journeys.
Keep vehicle keys and documents secure when the vehicle is not in use.
Follow the required route and time schedules when operating assigned vehicles.
Safe Transportation of Staff and Goods
Transport authorized staff members, officials, visitors, goods, documents, mail, and other assigned items safely and reliably.
Ensure the security and safety of passengers and goods throughout transportation.
Take appropriate care when transporting materials to avoid loss or damage.
Maintain the integrity and security of goods and materials while they are in transit.
Follow assigned routes and schedules while carrying out transportation duties.
Ensure passengers and authorized items reach their destinations safely.
Vehicle Security
Ensure that vehicle keys are kept securely when the vehicle is not in use.
Keep vehicle documents secure and properly controlled.
Follow established route and time schedules.
Take appropriate measures to protect the assigned vehicle and its contents.
Ensure that the vehicle is properly secured when parked or not being used.
Vehicle Records and Accountability
Maintain proper records of vehicle mileage.
Record the destinations travelled during assigned duties.
Record the time associated with vehicle movements as required.
Ensure vehicle movement records are accurate and up to date.
Maintain proper records to support accountability and control of the movement of the assigned vehicle.
Ensure that information relating to vehicle use is properly recorded for reference and accountability.
Reporting Incidents and Vehicle Problems
Detect and report malfunctioning vehicle systems.
Report any incidents involving the assigned vehicle to the relevant authorities.
Report accidents promptly and provide the necessary information for further action.
Ensure that vehicle-related issues are communicated to the relevant persons for appropriate follow-up.
Advise on any problems identified during vehicle operation or daily inspections as required.
Basic Mechanical Knowledge
Apply basic mechanical knowledge when checking the condition of the assigned vehicle.
Identify common vehicle problems and malfunctioning systems.
Carry out minor vehicle repairs where necessary and within the required level of ability.
Conduct basic diagnosis of vehicle problems.
Report mechanical issues that require further attention or maintenance.
Requirements
Driving Licence
A valid driving licence, Class ABCE, is required.
Driving Skills
Excellent driving skills.
Ability to operate assigned vehicles safely and responsibly.
Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
Ability to follow assigned routes and time schedules.
Ability to transport staff, visitors, goods, documents, mail, and other items safely.
Professional Experience
At least three years of experience as a driver.
Excellent driving records.
Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
Experience handling vehicle-related responsibilities and transportation duties.
Mechanical Knowledge
Basic mechanical knowledge.
Ability to carry out minor vehicle repairs.
Ability to perform basic vehicle diagnosis.
Ability to identify and report malfunctioning vehicle systems.
Location and Travel Requirements
The successful candidate will be based in Nairobi. The position requires regular travel to the Company’s project site in Marsabit. The driver may also be required to travel to other locations from time to time in line with the responsibilities and operational requirements of the role.
The successful candidate should therefore be prepared to undertake regular travel as required while ensuring that assigned transportation duties are completed safely, reliably, and responsibly.
The role requires proper attention to vehicle condition, passenger and goods safety, vehicle security, documentation, and accurate record keeping. The driver will be expected to maintain the assigned vehicle appropriately, carry out daily checks, follow required schedules, and report incidents or mechanical concerns promptly.
A successful candidate should demonstrate excellent driving skills, maintain a good driving record, understand applicable driving rules and regulations, and possess basic mechanical knowledge. The ability to carry out minor repairs and basic diagnosis will also be important in maintaining the vehicle in good working condition.
The driver will play an important role in ensuring that authorized staff members, officials, visitors, goods, documents, mail, and other items are transported safely and efficiently between required locations. Proper accountability, vehicle security, and adherence to assigned routes and schedules will be essential aspects of the position.
