SCHOOL DRIVER
Role Summary
The School Driver will be responsible for providing safe, reliable, and professional transportation services for school staff, students, visitors, and other relevant stakeholders. The driver will operate assigned school vehicles within Nairobi and its surrounding areas while ensuring that all journeys are conducted safely and in accordance with applicable traffic requirements and school policies.
A key responsibility of the position will be to ensure that assigned vehicles remain in good working condition and are properly serviced whenever required. The driver will conduct routine vehicle checks, maintain appropriate vehicle records, and promptly report any maintenance or mechanical concerns that may affect the safety or reliability of the vehicle.
The role will also involve supporting the School with various logistical and administrative activities. These may include transporting staff and students for official school activities, supporting school events and trips, assisting with sports fixtures, delivering documents and packages, running assigned administrative errands, and making minor purchases when required.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a high level of professionalism in all daily interactions with staff, students, visitors, and other stakeholders. The driver should demonstrate responsible conduct, reliability, good judgement, and a strong commitment to safety while performing assigned duties.
Key Responsibilities
1. Safe Transportation
The School Driver will provide safe and dependable transportation for staff, students, and visitors participating in school activities and official duties.
Key responsibilities include:
Safely transporting school staff to and from approved destinations.
Transporting students for authorised school activities.
Providing transportation for visitors when required.
Supporting official school duties that require vehicle transportation.
Ensuring that passengers are transported safely and responsibly.
Following appropriate safety procedures during all journeys.
Operating school vehicles responsibly within Nairobi and its environs.
Maintaining professionalism when interacting with passengers and other road users.
Ensuring that transportation duties are carried out in accordance with school requirements.
Safety will remain a priority throughout all transportation activities. The driver will be expected to exercise appropriate care and responsibility when transporting members of the school community.
2. Support for School Events and Activities
The driver will provide logistical transportation support for school events and other activities.
Responsibilities include:
Supporting transportation arrangements for school events.
Assisting with logistical requirements for school trips.
Providing transportation support for sports fixtures.
Transporting staff, students, and relevant materials required for approved activities.
Supporting the school in ensuring that transportation arrangements are carried out effectively.
Assisting with movement requirements associated with official school activities.
The role may require flexibility when supporting school events, trips, and sporting activities, particularly where transportation support is required to facilitate planned activities.
3. Collection and Delivery Services
The School Driver will assist with the collection and delivery of documents, mail, packages, and other approved items.
Key duties include:
Collecting mail as instructed.
Delivering mail to designated recipients or locations.
Collecting documents on behalf of the School.
Delivering official documents as required.
Collecting and delivering packages.
Ensuring that items entrusted to the driver are handled appropriately.
Completing assigned delivery and collection tasks within the required arrangements.
The driver should maintain responsibility for items being transported and ensure that they reach the intended destination as instructed.
4. Administrative Errands and Purchases
The driver will support the School with assigned administrative errands and minor purchases.
Responsibilities may include:
Running administrative errands when assigned.
Making minor purchases on behalf of the School when instructed.
Collecting items required for school operations.
Supporting staff with approved logistical errands.
Completing assigned errands responsibly and professionally.
Following instructions provided regarding purchases and administrative tasks.
These duties will require reliability, good judgement, and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
5. Payment of Utility Bills and School Charges
The driver may be required to support the School by paying utility bills and other school-related charges when instructed.
Key responsibilities include:
Making approved utility bill payments.
Paying school-related charges as directed.
Following instructions relating to payments.
Ensuring that assigned payment-related errands are completed appropriately.
Supporting the School with relevant administrative payment duties when required.
6. Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
The driver will be responsible for monitoring the condition of assigned vehicles and ensuring that potential maintenance issues are identified promptly.
Responsibilities include:
Conducting daily checks of assigned vehicles.
Checking the general condition of the vehicle before use.
Identifying maintenance requirements.
Reporting vehicle maintenance needs promptly.
Ensuring that vehicles receive appropriate servicing.
Monitoring the condition of assigned vehicles.
Ensuring that required vehicle documentation is available and maintained.
Reporting any concerns that could affect the safe operation of the vehicle.
Regular vehicle checks will help ensure that school vehicles remain safe, reliable, and suitable for their intended use.
7. Vehicle Cleanliness and General Condition
The driver will maintain assigned vehicles in a clean and presentable condition.
Key responsibilities include:
Keeping assigned vehicles clean.
Maintaining the general condition of the vehicles.
Ensuring vehicles are presentable when transporting staff, students, and visitors.
Taking appropriate care of assigned vehicles.
Reporting any issues affecting the condition of the vehicle.
The driver should take responsibility for maintaining the vehicle to an appropriate standard throughout its use.
8. Vehicle Records
The driver will maintain accurate records relating to vehicle use and operation.
This includes:
Recording trips accurately.
Maintaining mileage records.
Keeping fuel records.
Ensuring vehicle-related records are kept up to date.
Providing accurate information regarding vehicle usage when required.
Accurate records will support appropriate monitoring of vehicle operations and fuel usage.
9. Compliance and Safety
The driver will be required to comply with applicable traffic laws, safety requirements, and School policies.
Responsibilities include:
Following all applicable traffic laws.
Observing road safety requirements.
Complying with relevant safety rules.
Following School policies and procedures.
Operating vehicles responsibly at all times.
Maintaining professional conduct when interacting with stakeholders.
Prioritising the safety of passengers and other road users.
The driver is expected to demonstrate responsible driving practices and maintain professionalism during all official duties.
Qualifications and Experience
10. Academic Qualification
The successful candidate should possess a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.
11. Driving Licence
The candidate must hold a valid Kenyan Driver’s Licence in the relevant Class D category, including D1, D2, or D3, with a PSV endorsement.
The licence should be valid and appropriate for the transportation duties associated with the position.
12. Certificate of Good Conduct
The candidate must have a valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
This requirement forms part of the eligibility criteria for the position.
13. Driving Experience
The successful candidate must have a minimum of three years of driving experience.
Previous driving experience within an educational setting will be an added advantage, particularly where the candidate has experience supporting transportation requirements involving school activities, staff, students, or visitors.
14. Additional Certifications and Knowledge
The following will be considered additional advantages:
Certification in Defensive Driving.
First Aid certification.
A basic understanding of vehicle mechanical aspects.
Knowledge of basic vehicle mechanics will be useful in identifying potential vehicle issues and reporting maintenance requirements promptly.
