Tractor Operator Job Description

1. Job Summary

The Tractor Operator is responsible for operating tractors and other agricultural machinery to support efficient farm operations, including land preparation, planting, spraying, harvesting, transportation, and other field activities. The role also involves carrying out routine equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure machinery remains safe, reliable, and operational.

The successful candidate will maintain accurate operational records, comply with occupational health and safety standards, and support general farm activities as required. The position requires practical knowledge of agricultural machinery, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently under varying weather conditions and seasonal demands.

2. Key Duties and Responsibilities

2.1 Tractor and Machinery Operation

The successful candidate will:

• Operate tractors and other agricultural machinery safely and efficiently.

• Perform land preparation activities, including ploughing, harrowing, and cultivation.

• Operate equipment during planting, spraying, fertilizing, and harvesting activities.

• Transport farm produce, materials, equipment, and supplies using tractors or authorized vehicles.

• Operate machinery according to manufacturer guidelines and institutional procedures.

• Ensure all assigned field operations are completed within scheduled timelines.

• Adjust machinery settings to suit different farming operations and field conditions.

2.2 Equipment Maintenance

The Tractor Operator will:

• Conduct daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections of tractors and farm equipment.

• Check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, fuel levels, tyres, brakes, lights, and other critical components.

• Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and cleaning of machinery.

• Calibrate tractors and attached implements before use where required.

• Replace minor worn-out parts where authorized.

• Ensure machinery remains clean and in good working condition.

• Report mechanical faults promptly to the supervisor or maintenance department.

2.3 Repairs and Mechanical Support

The employee will:

• Identify mechanical faults during routine inspections.

• Perform basic repairs and adjustments on tractors and farm implements.

• Support maintenance personnel during major repairs.

• Recommend equipment servicing where necessary.

• Monitor equipment performance and report recurring mechanical issues.

• Ensure defective equipment is not operated until repairs are completed.

2.4 Vehicle Operation

The successful candidate will:

• Drive institutional vehicles where authorized and required.

• Ensure vehicles are operated safely and responsibly.

• Observe all traffic laws and organizational transport policies.

• Conduct routine inspections before operating assigned vehicles.

• Maintain cleanliness and roadworthiness of assigned vehicles.

2.5 Record Keeping

The Tractor Operator will:

• Maintain accurate work logs for daily field operations.

• Record fuel consumption and usage.

• Document maintenance activities and repairs performed.

• Report machine operating hours accurately.

• Maintain records of completed assignments and equipment utilization.

• Submit reports to supervisors within the required timelines.

2.6 Safety and Compliance

The employee will:

• Follow occupational safety and health regulations at all times.

• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during farm operations.

• Operate machinery safely to prevent accidents and equipment damage.

• Observe environmental conservation practices during field operations.

• Report accidents, equipment damage, or unsafe working conditions immediately.

• Comply with institutional policies and farm operating procedures.

2.7 General Farm Support

The successful candidate will:

• Assist with general farming activities when required.

• Support planting, harvesting, irrigation, and other agricultural operations.

• Help move farm equipment and materials safely.

• Participate in seasonal farming activities.

• Assist colleagues in completing assigned farm tasks.

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor that support farm operations.

2.8 Teamwork and Communication

The Tractor Operator will:

• Work closely with farm supervisors, mechanics, and other farm staff.

• Communicate operational challenges promptly.

• Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.

• Support teamwork and cooperation across the farm.

3. Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess the following qualifications:

• Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of D+ (Plus) or its equivalent.

• Valid Class G or G12 Driving Licence for tractor operation.

• Valid Class B2 or Class B/C Driving Licence (or equivalent) for operating standard motor vehicles.

• Valid Certificate of Good Conduct.

Added Advantage

• Artisan or Craft Certificate in Agricultural Engineering or a related field.

• Candidates who reside in or originate from Cheplanget Ward may have an added advantage where permitted by organizational recruitment policies.

4. Work Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

• A minimum of five (5) years of experience operating tractors and agricultural machinery.

• Experience performing land preparation, planting, spraying, harvesting, and transport operations.

• Practical experience carrying out routine maintenance and basic repairs on tractors and farm equipment.

• Experience working in commercial farms, agricultural institutions, or similar farming environments.

The successful candidate must observe all occupational health and safety requirements, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and be available to work flexible hours, including weekends or extended shifts during peak planting and harvesting seasons.

Terms of Employment

• Employment will be governed by the applicable labour laws of Kenya, including the Employment Act, 2007, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007, the Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA), 2007, the Labour Relations Act, 2007, and any other relevant legislation.
