Driver Job Description
1. Job Summary
The Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of company products, staff, and other authorized items to designated destinations. The position plays a critical role in ensuring customer orders are delivered accurately, safely, and within the required timelines while maintaining high standards of customer service and professionalism. The Driver is also responsible for safeguarding company assets, maintaining accurate transport records, ensuring proper handling of goods, and keeping the assigned vehicle in excellent working condition.
The successful candidate will ensure compliance with traffic laws, company policies, occupational health and safety requirements, and transport regulations. The role requires integrity, reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to represent the organization positively during interactions with customers and other stakeholders.
2. Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Driver will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
2.1 Transportation and Delivery of Products
The successful candidate will:
Safely transport company products to customers, branches, suppliers, and other approved destinations.
Deliver products within the agreed schedules and delivery timelines.
Confirm delivery locations before commencing each trip.
Ensure all deliveries are completed accurately and efficiently.
Handle products carefully to prevent damage during transportation.
Return undelivered goods to the warehouse together with the required documentation.
Represent the company professionally during all deliveries.
2.2 Loading and Offloading
The Driver will:
Assist in loading products onto the delivery vehicle.
Ensure products are arranged securely to prevent movement during transit.
Offload products safely at customer premises or designated locations.
Verify that all products loaded match the delivery documentation.
Handle products carefully to minimize losses and damage.
Report damaged or missing goods immediately.
2.3 Delivery Documentation
The employee will be responsible for:
Checking delivery notes before leaving the warehouse.
Confirming product quantities against delivery documents.
Obtaining customer signatures after successful deliveries.
Returning completed delivery documents to the appropriate office.
Collecting authorized customer payments or official documents where required.
Maintaining proper accountability for all company documents entrusted during transportation.
2.4 Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
The Driver will:
Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after every trip.
Check fuel levels, engine oil, coolant, tyres, brakes, lights, and other essential vehicle components.
Report mechanical faults immediately to the supervisor.
Ensure the assigned vehicle is serviced according to the maintenance schedule.
Keep the vehicle clean both inside and outside.
Monitor vehicle performance and report any unusual operating conditions.
Ensure the vehicle remains roadworthy at all times.
2.5 Safety and Compliance
The successful candidate will:
Observe all Kenyan traffic laws and road safety regulations.
Drive responsibly and defensively at all times.
Follow company transport and safety policies.
Wear the required personal protective equipment where applicable.
Ensure products are transported safely and securely.
Report accidents, traffic violations, breakdowns, or safety incidents immediately.
Maintain a valid driving licence and comply with all legal driving requirements.
2.6 Route Planning and Time Management
The Driver will:
Plan efficient travel routes before every journey.
Use the most suitable routes to minimize travel time and fuel consumption.
Monitor road conditions and adjust routes when necessary.
Ensure deliveries are completed within scheduled timelines.
Communicate delays promptly to the supervisor and affected customers.
Manage time effectively to improve delivery efficiency.
2.7 Customer Service
The employee will:
Treat customers respectfully and professionally.
Maintain positive relationships with customers during deliveries.
Respond politely to customer inquiries.
Handle customer concerns professionally and refer complex issues to management.
Promote a positive image of the organization through professional conduct.
Demonstrate honesty, courtesy, and reliability in every customer interaction.
2.8 Record Keeping
The Driver will maintain accurate records by:
Recording daily trips and travel schedules.
Maintaining mileage logs.
Recording fuel consumption accurately.
Documenting vehicle maintenance activities.
Keeping records of deliveries completed.
Preparing transport reports when required.
Submitting all records within the required timelines.
2.9 Security of Company Assets
The successful candidate will:
Safeguard company products during transportation.
Protect the assigned vehicle against theft or damage.
Ensure delivery documents and customer records remain secure.
Prevent unauthorized use of the company vehicle.
Report any security concerns immediately.
Maintain accountability for all company property assigned.
2.10 Teamwork and Communication
The Driver will:
Work closely with warehouse staff during loading and dispatch.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues.
Report operational challenges promptly.
Support other departments whenever required.
Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
Promote teamwork and cooperation across the organization.
2.11 Additional Responsibilities
The successful candidate may also:
Assist with warehouse activities during low delivery periods.
Support stock verification where necessary.
Participate in company safety and compliance programs.
Perform any other duties assigned by management that are related to the position.
3. Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess the following qualifications:
Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or an equivalent qualification.
Valid Kenyan Driving Licence Class BCE or the appropriate class for the assigned vehicle.
Valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
Additional training in defensive driving, occupational safety, or customer service will be an added advantage.
4. Work Experience
The ideal candidate should have:
A minimum of three (3) years of professional driving experience.
Experience working in distribution, logistics, FMCG, agrovet, agricultural supplies, or a related industry.
Experience handling product deliveries and customer interactions.
Experience maintaining vehicle records and transport documentation.
Good knowledge of transport operations and delivery procedures.
