About this role
Driver Job Opportunity in Machakos County
A driving opportunity is available for an experienced driver who can provide safe and reliable transportation for staff, visitors, donors, and official activities. The position involves much more than driving from one location to another. The successful candidate will also be responsible for vehicle care, routine reporting, basic administration, field support, and ensuring that the assigned vehicle remains in good operating condition.
The position requires a KCSE certificate, at least three years of driving experience, and knowledge of basic motor vehicle maintenance. Applicants must also be local residents of Machakos County.
Transportation That Keeps Work Moving
One of the main responsibilities of the driver will be facilitating staff to and from work and supporting transportation needs related to official duties.
The driver will ensure that staff are transported in a timely manner while giving careful attention to safety throughout every journey. This responsibility also extends to visitors and donors who may require transportation to and from the field.
Field activities can require additional transport arrangements, particularly during major events. The driver will therefore help ensure that additional vehicles and drivers are mobilized when needed for activities such as major donor visits, campaigns, evaluations, and baseline activities.
The aim is to ensure that staff and programme activities are properly facilitated without unnecessary delays.
Safety Comes First
Safety will remain a key responsibility throughout the role.
The driver is expected to ensure the safety of staff and the vehicle while travelling. This includes maintaining maximum care of the vehicle and following the required procedures when using it.
Traffic laws must be obeyed at all times. The driver will also be expected to use recommended parking areas and obtain the required permission before using the vehicle in accordance with established policy.
These responsibilities require a driver who understands that safe transportation involves responsible vehicle use as well as careful driving.
Looking After the Assigned Vehicle
Vehicle care will form a significant part of the position.
The driver will be responsible for keeping the vehicle clean at all times and ensuring that the vehicle movement log book is kept up to date.
Before and during use, the driver will check the mechanical and operational soundness of the vehicle. This helps identify issues that may affect the safe and reliable operation of the vehicle.
The vehicle must also be serviced at the required time. The driver will need to monitor servicing requirements and ensure that the vehicle receives the necessary attention when due.
The tools assigned to the vehicle must also be checked to ensure they are present and intact.
Handling Repairs and Mechanical Problems
The role includes some basic vehicle maintenance responsibilities.
The driver should be able to undertake minor repairs and identify situations that require major mechanical attention. Where major repairs are needed, the driver will make the appropriate recommendation.
Vehicle malfunctions must be reported to the fleet office.
The driver will also initiate the procurement process for motor vehicle repairs and maintenance when required.
This means the driver needs to pay attention to the condition of the vehicle and act when maintenance or repair issues arise rather than allowing problems to go unreported.
Proper Control of Vehicle Keys
Vehicle keys must also be handled according to the required procedures.
All spare vehicle keys should be submitted to Fleet Management for safe custody.
At the end of every trip, the driver will surrender the vehicle keys to the respective supervisors.
These procedures help maintain proper control over the vehicle and its access.
The driver will also be responsible for parking the vehicle in recommended parking areas and ensuring that it is properly cared for when not in use.
Keeping the Vehicle Records in Order
Documentation is another part of the position.
The driver will prepare monthly and other required vehicle reports and file copies after they have been approved.
Invoices and fuel returns must also be forwarded to Fleet Management for the payment process.
In the event of an accident, the driver will be required to forward a detailed report for claim processing.
Timely submission of motor vehicle reports is expected. Good record keeping is therefore an important part of the position alongside the actual driving responsibilities.
Supporting Field and Administrative Activities
The role also extends into general support work.
The driver will facilitate the delivery of parcels and mail as required.
Working together with the Administration department, the driver will liaise with service providers to help ensure that quality services are provided.
The driver will also work with respective staff when planning and coordinating field facilitation services.
Community mobilization support is another responsibility. This means the driver may assist staff with activities that require engagement and movement within communities.
The position also includes acting as a bank agent for bank transactions.
Together, these responsibilities make the role broader than transportation alone. The driver will support the smooth running of various operational activities connected with staff and programme work.
What Applicants Need
The minimum educational requirement is a KCSE certificate.
Applicants must have at least three years of driving experience. Experience should cover the relevant driving classifications, including Class C1, C, CE, D3, or CD under the new driving classification.
Basic knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance is also required.
Applicants should have a computer literacy certificate, showing basic computer skills relevant to administrative and reporting responsibilities.
A reference letter from the applicant's local chief is also required.
Additional qualifications can provide an advantage. First Aid and other safety certification is an added advantage, as is basic defensive driving certification.
Previous experience working in an NGO environment is also an added advantage.
Local Residency Requirement
The position has a specific location requirement.
Applicants must be local residents of Machakos County.
This is an important requirement because the position involves supporting field activities and providing transportation services within the area.
Documents Applicants Must Provide
Applicants are required to attach the following documents:
CV
Copy of ID, both sides
Valid driver's licence
Reference letter from the local chief
These documents should be included with the application as required.
A Role Built Around Reliability
The responsibilities of this position bring together transportation, vehicle maintenance, safety, reporting, administration, and field support.
The driver will transport staff and other authorized passengers, support donor and field activities, maintain the vehicle, monitor servicing requirements, report malfunctions, handle vehicle documentation, and follow established procedures for vehicle use.
At the same time, the driver will support parcel and mail delivery, community mobilization, field coordination, service-provider communication, and bank transactions.
The successful candidate will therefore need to be reliable, safety-conscious, organized, and capable of following established procedures.
With the required KCSE qualification, driving experience, valid licence, vehicle maintenance knowledge, and local residency in Machakos County, the candidate will be expected to provide dependable transportation while helping ensure that staff and programme activities receive the logistical support they require.
