Job Purpose
Oversee the daily operational activities of the data centre and support the reliable installation, servicing, repair, and maintenance of critical facility infrastructure, equipment, and building systems.
Work alongside the Facility Manager in directing the Operations Team, delivering infrastructure improvement projects, and strengthening the processes, tools, and safety practices required to support business growth and operational scalability.
Position and Job Scope
Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Facility Supervisor is part of the Operations Team and works closely with other internal departments. The role also involves interaction with customers, contractors, and suppliers.
This position has a significant impact on maintaining the availability, reliability, and efficiency of data centre facilities and infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities
Management Support
Assist the Facility Manager in assessing staff development requirements and organizing appropriate training, coaching, and mentorship for the Operations Team.
Supervise outsourced personnel and contractors, ensuring their work meets required quality, safety, and compliance standards.
Allocate and prioritize assignments, review work plans, and provide estimates and inspection support where necessary.
Assist with projects and operational initiatives assigned by the Facility Manager.
Provide technical input and guidance on facility projects, including reviewing relevant system specifications and monitoring project execution.
Coordinate team schedules, shift arrangements, and staff leave plans to maintain adequate operational coverage.
Take responsibility for leading the Operations Team when the Area Facility Manager is unavailable.
Maintenance and Repairs
Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on buildings, infrastructure, and equipment to reduce service interruptions and equipment downtime.
Perform daily inspections and monitor data centre systems to identify potential faults or operational issues at an early stage.
Assist in developing and implementing maintenance programmes for the data centre and its equipment.
Ensure maintenance and repair work is properly recorded and completed documentation is submitted promptly.
Supervise contractor-led maintenance and repair activities and verify that work complies with approved quality and technical requirements.
Monitor service-level indicators, identify performance shortfalls, and implement appropriate corrective actions.
Provide technical input into power consumption monitoring, capacity requirements, and infrastructure improvement initiatives.
Serve as the initial technical contact for requests received through the Customer Service Centre.
Respond to facility alarms as the first line of technical support, resolving incidents where possible and escalating them in accordance with established procedures.
Customer Implementation and Service Delivery
Participate in the 24-hour on-call rotation to provide uninterrupted operational support.
Carry out the physical implementation of customer installations within the data centre.
Work with the Customer Implementation Department during the installation, commissioning, removal, and decommissioning of customer equipment, ensuring every activity and outcome is properly documented.
Provide agreed Value-Added Services to customers within established service standards and timelines.
Procurement
Keep the data centre equipment and asset register accurate, complete, and current.
Assess material and supply requirements, prepare purchase requests, and submit them to the Facility Manager for authorization.
Identify suitable materials and suppliers, coordinate with vendors and contractors, and provide preliminary cost information or work sequencing updates to the Facility Manager when required.
Health and Safety
Work with the Facility Manager and Health & Safety Manager to establish and implement effective data centre safety plans.
Ensure iColo safety policies, procedures, and training requirements are consistently followed by employees and contractors.
Organize and deliver regular safety awareness and training sessions for personnel and contractors.
Inspect equipment, systems, and installations to verify compliance with applicable safety requirements and regulations.
Assist in preparing, reviewing, and maintaining emergency response plans for the data centre.
Support accident and incident investigations, carry out routine safety inspections, and identify unsafe conditions or practices across the facility and shared areas.
Additional Responsibilities
Keep operational records, reports, and supporting documentation accurate and current.
Review operational reports and data, identify important trends, and provide recommendations in consultation with the Facility Manager.
Develop and enhance monitoring tools and procedures while integrating additional iColo systems into the service monitoring environment as required.
Monitor utility usage and identify opportunities to improve resource efficiency.
Maintain monitoring scripts and ensure system thresholds and alerts remain accurate and relevant.
Improve alerting and escalation processes to ensure they support management-approved SLAs.
Promote knowledge sharing and industry best practices by maintaining strong working relationships with Operations Teams and supervisors across the organization.
Implement working practices and improvement initiatives that support the achievement and maintenance of agreed PUE targets.
Contribute to sustainability programmes by monitoring energy use, identifying efficiency measures, and supporting environmentally responsible data centre operations.
Perform other responsibilities assigned by the reporting manager or senior leadership.
Hard Skills
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
At least 8 years of progressive engineering experience, including a minimum of 4 years working in data centre operations or another mission-critical environment.
Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and developing the capabilities of engineering personnel.
Strong knowledge of data centre infrastructure, industry standards, construction activities, and project management practices.
Extensive technical knowledge of operating and maintaining critical infrastructure such as UPS systems, generators, transformers, power distribution equipment, and fire suppression systems.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including MS Project, as well as AutoCAD. Ability to quickly learn and use other software platforms adopted by iColo.io.
