About the Role
The Regional Finance Controller (RFC) will provide financial oversight, governance, assurance, compliance support, and capacity development across Islamic Relief country offices and implementing partners in West and East Africa.
This position extends beyond conventional financial control responsibilities. The RFC will work closely with Country Directors, Finance Managers, operational teams, and local partners to improve financial management systems, strengthen organizational capacity, and promote strong financial stewardship throughout the region.
The role will contribute to improved financial performance, stronger internal controls, effective donor and statutory compliance, and long-term financial sustainability. Through direct engagement with country offices and partners, the RFC will help strengthen financial discipline, transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making.
The position combines strategic financial oversight with hands-on implementation. Responsibilities will include reviewing financial performance, mentoring finance teams, identifying and managing financial risks, supporting fraud prevention measures, and ensuring finance functions effectively support programme delivery and donor confidence.
Reporting to the Global Finance Operations Lead, the RFC will provide technical expertise and leadership across a diverse regional portfolio while supporting the continued development of Islamic Relief’s global finance operating model.
The successful candidate should expect to spend approximately 50% of their working time travelling across the region to provide direct support to country offices, finance teams, and implementing partners.
The Successful Candidate Will Have
A professionally recognized accounting qualification such as ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, ICMA, or an equivalent qualification.
Significant senior-level experience in financial management, preferably within the humanitarian, NGO, development, or international non-profit sector.
Demonstrated experience overseeing financial governance, compliance, assurance, and internal controls across multiple entities or locations.
Strong knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, financial planning, and scenario analysis.
Experience preparing consolidated management accounts, variance analyses, financial performance reports, and strategic financial insights.
Proven experience managing donor compliance requirements and statutory obligations.
Strong understanding of financial risk management, fraud prevention, and internal control frameworks.
Experience leading, developing, mentoring, and coaching finance teams.
Excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to work effectively with both finance and non-finance leaders.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial information clearly.
Experience developing and delivering finance training, capability-building initiatives, and staff development programmes.
High standards of integrity, accountability, professionalism, and cultural awareness.
Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Islamic Relief Worldwide.
Fluency in English and French.
Desirable
Experience managing donor-funded programmes and preparing institutional grant reports within international NGOs.
Experience working in fragile, conflict-affected, or otherwise complex operating environments.
Good understanding of Africa’s geopolitical, regulatory, and socio-economic environments.
Experience contributing to finance transformation, organizational change, or continuous improvement programmes.
Experience working with local implementing partners and sub-grantees.
