Finance Coordinator
About the Position
LAW’s Nairobi office supports programmes across Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan while developing partnerships and working with different stakeholders to promote human rights and accountability.
LAW is seeking a skilled and highly organized Finance Coordinator to work with Programme Managers across the Africa region and the Finance Manager based at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva. The role will focus on coordinating financial activities, strengthening financial management processes, supporting grant administration, and helping local partners improve their financial capacity.
The Finance Coordinator will also support partners with budget preparation and grant-related financial processes while ensuring that activities comply with LAW policies and applicable donor requirements.
Position Details
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Duration: Full-time, 12 months, with possible extension depending on funding and satisfactory performance.
Salary: KES 3,660,000–3,780,000 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits.
The role will support the timely preparation of master budgets, financial reports, monthly bank reconciliations, and audits.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting
Record and process financial transactions in LAW’s accounting system accurately and within the required timelines.
Prepare banking payments and submit them for approval.
Develop monthly cash calls and quarterly spending and disbursement forecasts.
Allocate administrative expenses across grants on a quarterly basis.
Maintain financial controls, including bank and petty cash reconciliations, for review and approval by the Programme Manager.
Coordinate with the Geneva Finance team to ensure transactions are correctly allocated and prepare monthly intercompany reconciliations.
Collect and process invoices relating to assigned grants and ensure payments are made promptly.
Take the lead in coordinating local grant audits in Kenya.
Assist the Geneva Finance team with the annual statutory audit.
Review monthly payroll and ensure salaries are processed on time.
Provide monthly exchange rates for entry into LAW’s financial accounting system.
Budget and Grant Management
Work with Programme Managers to prepare annual fixed-cost budgets.
Ensure financial and procurement activities comply with LAW policies, accounting principles, and donor requirements.
Provide accurate and current financial information, including monthly budget monitoring and spending plans for all assigned grants.
Prepare grant budget revisions when necessary.
Assist Programme Managers in developing budgets for new grant proposals.
Ensure expenditure is appropriately allocated according to approved budgets and projected spending.
Maintain financial records and archives in line with internal policies and donor requirements.
Prepare funding requests and financial reports for donors.
Assist in coordinating internal and external audits in accordance with applicable donor requirements.
Act as a finance focal point for LAW’s partners and implementing partners.
Provide financial training and support to field partners when required.
Review financial reports submitted by partners and ensure all supporting documentation is properly maintained.
Process advance payments to partners when required.
Qualifications and Experience
Must have the legal right to work in Kenya.
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Business Management, or a related field.
CPA-K or an equivalent professional accounting qualification such as ACCA, CIMA, or CPA.
At least five years of demonstrated experience in a similar finance position, preferably within an INGO.
Strong understanding of Kenyan statutory and tax requirements, including PAYE, VAT, Withholding Tax, NSSF, SHIF/SHA, and other applicable obligations.
Excellent written and spoken English.
Advanced Excel skills with demonstrated practical experience.
Experience working with donor financial frameworks, including NORAD, US, FCDO, EU, UN agencies, or other institutional donors.
Experience using financial management systems such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Navision, or comparable enterprise accounting software.
Ability to work under pressure and manage competing deadlines.
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to stakeholders without a financial background.
Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to coordinate several projects in a fast-paced working environment.
