FTTH Installation & Support Technician Job Description
1. Job Summary
The FTTH (Fiber to the Home) Installation & Support Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing fiber optic networks to ensure reliable broadband connectivity and excellent customer service. The role involves installing overhead and underground fiber optic cables, performing fiber splicing and termination, conducting preventive maintenance, diagnosing network faults, and supporting customers with technical issues both onsite and remotely.
The successful candidate will ensure all installations comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and company procedures while maintaining accurate technical documentation and delivering high-quality network services. This position requires strong technical expertise in fiber optic technologies, excellent troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work independently in both indoor and outdoor environments.
2. Key Duties and Responsibilities
2.1 Fiber Optic Installation
The successful candidate will:
Install overhead and underground fiber optic feeder, distribution, and drop cables.
Install indoor and outdoor fiber access terminals, joint boxes, and fiber distribution pedestals.
Install structured cabling and network infrastructure according to approved standards.
Route and secure fiber optic cables to prevent damage and signal loss.
Ensure all installations meet company specifications and industry best practices.
Verify that completed installations are fully operational before handover.
2.2 Fiber Splicing and Cable Termination
The FTTH Installation & Support Technician will:
Perform fusion and mechanical fiber splicing.
Terminate fiber optic cables accurately and efficiently.
Inspect fiber connections to ensure minimal signal loss.
Maintain high-quality splice closures and cable joints.
Test completed splices for performance and reliability.
Follow standard fiber optic installation procedures during cable termination.
2.3 Testing and Network Troubleshooting
The employee will:
Test fiber optic networks using Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs).
Use power meters, Visual Fault Locators (VFLs), and other fiber testing equipment.
Diagnose network faults and identify signal losses.
Troubleshoot customer connectivity issues both onsite and remotely.
Restore network services within established service level agreements.
Verify network performance after repairs and maintenance.
2.4 Maintenance and Network Support
The successful candidate will:
Perform preventive maintenance on fiber optic infrastructure.
Inspect network equipment regularly to identify potential issues.
Repair damaged fiber cables and network components.
Replace defective equipment where necessary.
Monitor network performance and recommend improvements.
Minimize network downtime through timely maintenance activities.
2.5 Site Surveys and Network Planning
The FTTH Installation & Support Technician will:
Conduct site surveys before installation activities.
Use GPS-enabled applications to capture site information.
Assess installation requirements and identify potential risks.
Interpret network design drawings and installation plans.
Recommend practical installation solutions.
Support network expansion projects.
2.6 Customer Technical Support
The employee will:
Respond promptly to customer technical issues.
Provide professional onsite and remote technical support.
Explain technical issues and solutions clearly to customers.
Resolve customer complaints efficiently.
Educate customers on proper use of installed services and equipment.
Maintain high standards of customer satisfaction.
2.7 Documentation and Reporting
The successful candidate will:
Maintain accurate installation and maintenance records.
Prepare technical reports using Microsoft Office applications.
Record network faults and corrective actions taken.
Update equipment and inventory records.
Document completed work orders and customer service reports.
Submit reports within required timelines.
2.8 Inventory and Equipment Management
The FTTH Installation & Support Technician will:
Maintain accountability for assigned tools and testing equipment.
Monitor stock levels of fiber optic materials.
Report equipment damage or shortages promptly.
Ensure proper storage and handling of technical equipment.
Support inventory verification exercises.
Maintain equipment in good working condition.
2.9 Safety and Compliance
The employee will:
Follow occupational health and safety regulations during all field activities.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Observe safe working procedures when working at heights or in confined spaces.
Ensure compliance with telecommunications industry standards.
Report safety hazards, accidents, and incidents immediately.
Promote a safe working environment during installations and maintenance activities.
2.10 Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
The successful candidate will:
Work closely with network engineers, supervisors, and customer support teams.
Participate in technical meetings and training sessions.
Share technical knowledge and best practices with colleagues.
Recommend improvements to installation and maintenance procedures.
Support network upgrades and infrastructure improvement projects.
Perform any other duties assigned by management.
3. Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess the following qualifications:
Diploma in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field from a recognized institution.
Professional certification such as Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT), Fiber Optic Association (FOA), or equivalent will be an added advantage.
Valid Class BCE Driving Licence.
4. Work Experience
The ideal candidate should have:
A minimum of two (2) years of practical experience in fiber optic installation and maintenance.
Hands-on experience in fiber fusion splicing and cable termination.
Experience using Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), power meters, Visual Fault Locators (VFLs), and fusion splicers.
Experience troubleshooting fiber optic network faults.
Practical knowledge of structured cabling systems and telecommunications infrastructure.
Experience providing onsite technical support to customers.

The successful candidate must be physically fit, observe all occupational health and safety requirements, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and night shifts when operational requirements demand.
