General Paediatrician
Job Summary
The General Paediatrician will be responsible for delivering comprehensive and evidence-based healthcare to newborns, infants, children and adolescents. The role focuses on accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, preventive healthcare, patient safety and continuity of care. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong clinical judgment, professionalism, compassion and the ability to work effectively with children, families and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct thorough paediatric consultations, examinations and clinical assessments before establishing diagnoses and treatment plans.
Diagnose and manage common acute and chronic childhood illnesses, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, infectious, nutritional and developmental conditions.
Assess and provide initial management for paediatric emergencies, including stabilisation and appropriate referral or hospital admission where necessary.
Monitor children's growth, nutrition and developmental progress and provide preventive healthcare, immunisation, screening and relevant counselling.
Recognise developmental, behavioural, nutritional and child-safeguarding concerns and arrange suitable interventions or specialist referrals.
Request, review and interpret appropriate laboratory and diagnostic investigations to support clinical decision-making.
Develop individualised treatment plans and ensure patients receive appropriate follow-up and continuity of care.
Communicate diagnoses, treatment options and care plans clearly to parents, guardians and caregivers.
Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient management and facilitate referrals when required.
Maintain complete, accurate and confidential patient documentation in accordance with professional and institutional requirements.
Take part in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality-improvement programmes and patient-safety initiatives.
Promote responsible prescribing and effective use of medicines and other healthcare resources.
Participate in professional development activities, hospital training, mentoring and relevant educational programmes.
Observe hospital procedures, clinical guidelines, ethical standards, regulatory requirements and infection-prevention measures.
Foster respectful and professional relationships with patients, caregivers, colleagues and other stakeholders.
Education and Experience
MBChB or an equivalent recognised medical qualification.
MMed in Paediatrics or an equivalent postgraduate qualification from a recognised institution.
Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) as a Specialist Paediatrician.
Must hold a valid specialist practising licence in General Paediatrics.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or an equivalent qualification will be an added advantage.
3–5 years of practical experience in general paediatric care, preferably gained within a hospital or multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
