Actuary
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly analytical and innovative Actuary to join our multidisciplinary team of actuaries, data scientists, and financial experts in developing insurance solutions that address agriculture, climate, and emerging risks across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, pricing, and evaluating insurance products, conducting actuarial analysis, supporting risk placement with insurers and reinsurers, and leveraging data-driven insights to enhance product performance. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to innovative insurance solutions that improve financial resilience for underserved communities while working in a dynamic international environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Product Design & Pricing
Design, develop, and price innovative insurance products, with a focus on climate risk, agriculture, and other emerging insurance solutions.
Evaluate existing products and recommend pricing or structural enhancements based on actuarial analysis and market performance.
Support the implementation and launch of new insurance products across multiple markets.
Prepare technical documentation, product specifications, policy wordings, and pricing models.
2. Actuarial Analysis & Research
Conduct actuarial research to identify new product opportunities and improve existing insurance solutions.
Perform statistical and financial analyses to support product development and business strategy.
Evaluate risk exposure and develop appropriate pricing methodologies.
Produce actuarial reports and technical recommendations to support decision-making.
3. Data Analytics & Management
Collect, validate, and manage high-quality data used in actuarial modelling and product development.
Develop and implement data quality controls and governance processes.
Analyze customer, claims, and operational data to identify trends and business opportunities.
Create dashboards and visualizations that communicate complex analytical findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Support data automation initiatives that improve operational efficiency and reporting accuracy.
4. Insurance & Reinsurance Support
Provide actuarial and technical support during engagements with insurers and reinsurers.
Assist in structuring insurance and reinsurance arrangements for new and existing products.
Support negotiations involving product design, pricing, and risk-sharing agreements.
Build and maintain strong relationships with insurance and reinsurance partners.
Organize technical training sessions for insurers, reinsurers, and other industry stakeholders.
5. Client Engagement & Business Development
Engage with prospective clients to understand their risk management needs and insurance requirements.
Design tailored insurance solutions that address customer-specific risks.
Support commercial teams during product development, market expansion, and client presentations.
Participate in meetings with external partners to identify business opportunities and strengthen strategic relationships.
6. Claims & Payout Analysis
Monitor claims experience and analyze payout trends to evaluate product performance.
Prepare timely payout reports for internal teams, clients, insurers, and reinsurers.
Present claims and payout analyses to key stakeholders and support payout approval processes.
Use claims data to recommend product enhancements and pricing adjustments.
7. Innovation & Process Improvement
Collaborate with technology, automation, and innovation teams to improve insurance operations and product delivery.
Identify opportunities to automate actuarial processes, reporting, and data management activities.
Recommend innovative approaches that improve operational efficiency and customer experience.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the actuarial function.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
Bachelor's Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
A First Class Honours degree is preferred.
Professional Qualifications
Candidates should have:
Completion of at least six (6) internationally recognized actuarial examinations.
Progress toward Associate or Fellowship status with a recognized actuarial body will be an added advantage.
Experience
The ideal candidate should have:
Minimum three (3) years' experience in an actuarial or insurance analytics role.
Experience in insurance product pricing, actuarial modelling, or risk analysis.
Exposure to agriculture insurance, climate risk, or parametric insurance products is highly desirable.
Experience working with insurers, reinsurers, or financial institutions will be an added advantage.
Technical Skills
The successful candidate should demonstrate expertise in:
Actuarial modelling and pricing techniques.
Insurance and reinsurance principles.
Risk assessment and underwriting support.
Statistical analysis and predictive modelling.
Claims and portfolio performance analysis.
Data management and quality assurance.
Programming and analytical tools such as R, Python, SQL, or similar platforms.
Data visualization and reporting tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or equivalent software.
Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial modelling.
