ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Inkomoko Kenya Investment Officer has the following responsibilities:
DUE DILIGENCE & INVESTMENT PREPARATION (60%):
- Respond to questions from potential borrowers and help them apply for our investment products.
- Introduce our investment products to entrepreneurs and explain the repayment requirements and the importance of taking on debt.
- Do an investment review, collect detailed personal, business, and guaranty information, and help open a new investment account.
- Prepare and sign investment contracts, and arrange for the delivery of investments in kind.
- Do a thorough check of potential borrowers, including site visits, preparing necessary documents, and working with Business Development Advisors and Business Associates.
- Share all relevant materials with the Portfolio Manager and assist in making credit reports for Investment Committee meetings.
- Take photos of entrepreneurs, get them to sign photo release forms, and make sure their stories are posted on the Kiva platform for fundraising with all the correct details.
PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT (20%):
- Provide excellent customer service through daily interactions, written communication, and site visits to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with borrowers.
- Work with the Inkomoko Kenya Business Development Services team to support borrowers and conduct regular client visits for monitoring.
- Keep both delinquency and default rates below the set targets during annual planning.
- Keep track of borrower information and share updates with key stakeholders about client status.
- Actively participate in the weekly Portfolio Review Meeting as a key staff member.
- Maintain a system to track borrower payments and contact details.
- Work with the Finance & Admin team to create invoices and reconcile monthly transactions related to the investment department.
- Communicate with government officials, court systems, and others to follow up on unpaid loans.
- Ensure compliance with Kiva partnership requirements, including reporting and journaling.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (20%):
- Update the Investment Management System with details of disbursements and repayments.
- Be proficient in using investment software applications.
- Work with system providers to use the software to its full potential, making sure processes are efficient and accurate.
- Help design and maintain system parameters to meet the needs of different departments.
- Manage user access and security within the system.
- Ensure proper job responsibilities are separated and set up workflows for all stages of the investment process.
- Advise the management team on how to automate key lending processes.
- Supervise all investment operations, including processing payments, settling debts, and balancing accounts.
- Provide the lending team with updates and changes in procedures.
- Participate in reviewing and suggesting improvements to operational systems and procedures.
- Work with the lending team to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the Investment Management System.
- Prepare related reports and manage the system.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS
The Investment Officer will be a trusted partner to Inkomoko Kenya's clients.
The basic qualifications include:
- A university degree in Finance or a related field.
- Fluency in English and Swahili.
- Experience in Islamic lending is a plus.
- Strong financial and accounting skills; familiarity with financial policies in Kakuma.
- Experience in investment management, microfinance, capital leases, and access to finance for micro businesses and SMEs is strongly preferred.
- Prior experience dealing with customers and managing debt.
- Experience in a lending environment.
- Experience providing business advice to entrepreneurs.
- Familiarity with investment management software.
- The ability to deliver difficult messages to debtors and be assertive in collecting full payments.
- Experience in managing difficult clients and achieving good results.
- Strong attention to details and follow-through.
- Comfort with the civil court system and experience in litigation is preferred.
- Unrelenting perseverance, strong personal integrity, and good critical thinking skills.
- 2+ years of relevant work experience.
- The ability to legally work in Kenya.
