System Engineer at Computech Limited
About this role
The successful candidate will work with technologies including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris, VMware vSphere, Oracle VM and enterprise storage and SAN environments. The role also involves infrastructure monitoring, patching, backup validation, troubleshooting and technical documentation.
This is a hands-on infrastructure position requiring at least five years of enterprise infrastructure experience and the ability to provide advanced technical support for critical systems.
Managing Enterprise Hardware
The role begins at the physical infrastructure level. The successful candidate will install, rack and cable enterprise server and storage hardware and will also be responsible for troubleshooting and replacing equipment when necessary.
Hardware audits will form part of the responsibilities, as will the decommissioning of enterprise server and storage equipment.
The candidate will therefore need to be comfortable working with physical data-centre infrastructure as well as the software and systems running on that infrastructure.
Data-centre hardware troubleshooting is specifically identified as one of the key technical areas required for the position.
Storage and SAN Administration
Enterprise storage administration will be another major responsibility.
The Infrastructure Engineer will administer storage and SAN environments and handle activities such as LUN provisioning, snapshots and replication. The role also involves performance tuning and capacity planning to help maintain the required performance and availability of storage systems.
SAN zoning and switch maintenance are also included in the position. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out firmware updates and maintain the relevant components of the storage environment.
This requires a strong understanding of enterprise storage infrastructure and the relationship between servers, storage systems and SAN environments.
Virtualisation Responsibilities
The position also focuses heavily on virtualisation.
The successful candidate will manage VMware vSphere and Oracle VM environments. This includes deploying virtual machines and allocating resources appropriately.
Responsibilities will also include working with VM templates and managing High Availability and Distributed Resource Scheduler clusters within VMware environments.
The role further requires experience with P2V migrations, patching and upgrades.
A candidate applying for this position should therefore have practical experience managing virtualised enterprise environments rather than only theoretical knowledge of virtualisation technologies.
Linux and Solaris Administration
The successful applicant will administer and secure several enterprise operating systems.
These include:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Oracle Linux
Oracle Solaris
The work will cover installation, configuration, performance tuning, troubleshooting and system hardening.
Security is an important part of this responsibility. Systems will need to be hardened according to CIS, DISA STIG and internal security standards.
The candidate should therefore have strong operating-system administration skills combined with an understanding of infrastructure security requirements.
Experience with RHEL versions 7, 8 and 9 is specifically required, together with Oracle Linux and Solaris 11.4.
Patching and Change Management
OS, hypervisor and firmware patching will also fall under the responsibilities of the role.
The Infrastructure Engineer will plan and execute patching activities according to approved change procedures. After changes are implemented, the candidate will be expected to validate the systems and provide compliance reporting.
The position also gives the successful candidate authority to execute approved standard procedures and emergency changes when these are necessary to restore critical services.
Emergency changes must be promptly communicated and followed by appropriate post-incident documentation.
For non-emergency infrastructure changes, CAB approval will be required.
Monitoring Infrastructure Performance
Keeping enterprise infrastructure healthy will be another important part of the job.
The candidate will monitor infrastructure health, alerts, capacity and performance. Preventive maintenance will also be carried out to identify and address potential issues before they become larger incidents.
Environmental checks and firmware reviews are included in the responsibilities.
The role also requires restoration testing for VoIP and UPS systems. This means the successful candidate will contribute to ensuring that relevant supporting infrastructure can be restored and continues to function as required.
Backup Validation
Backup systems must also be checked and tested.
The Infrastructure Engineer will validate and troubleshoot backups using platforms such as Commvault and Veeam.
This responsibility requires the candidate to investigate backup-related issues and verify that backup processes are functioning correctly.
Backup validation forms part of the broader infrastructure support responsibilities and requires careful attention to system reliability and restoration requirements.
Advanced Technical Support
The successful candidate will provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 support for incidents involving servers, storage and operating systems.
The position requires collaboration with onsite teams, the Service Desk and Network teams when resolving infrastructure incidents.
Some incidents may require coordination across several technical teams, making communication and troubleshooting skills important.
The role also includes participation in a 24×7 on-call rotation. Applicants should therefore be prepared to provide technical support as part of an organised on-call arrangement.
Documentation and IT Service Management
Technical documentation will be maintained as part of the position.
The Infrastructure Engineer will maintain runbooks, system diagrams and physical layouts. ITSM records will also need to be kept up to date.
Weekly system-health reports will form another part of the documentation responsibilities.
Maintaining accurate technical records will help provide a clear picture of the infrastructure environment, its configuration, maintenance activities and overall health.
Improving Infrastructure
The position is not limited to maintaining existing systems.
The successful candidate will also recommend improvements relating to infrastructure, capacity and processes.
This requires an ability to identify areas where infrastructure performance, capacity or operational processes could be improved and communicate those recommendations appropriately.
The role therefore combines day-to-day technical operations with opportunities to contribute to infrastructure improvement.
Required Professional Background
Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in a related technical field or equivalent experience.
At least five years of hands-on enterprise infrastructure experience is required.
The candidate should demonstrate strong expertise in several areas, including RHEL 7, 8 and 9, Oracle Linux, Solaris 11.4, VMware vSphere, enterprise storage and SAN zoning.
Experience with data-centre hardware troubleshooting is also required, together with knowledge of TCP/IP and infrastructure security.
Automation skills are expected using one or more of the following:
Bash
Python
PowerShell
These skills can support the administration and management of enterprise infrastructure environments.
Certifications That Can Add Value
Certain professional certifications are preferred for this position.
These include RHCE, VCP-DCV, CompTIA Server+ and relevant vendor certifications.
Additional experience with Solaris 10 and 11, Oracle VM, Ansible and Terraform will also be an advantage.
Experience within regulated financial-services environments is another preferred qualification.
What the Position Requires
This role is suited to an infrastructure professional who combines strong practical skills with disciplined systems administration.
The successful candidate needs to be capable of working across physical servers, storage, SAN environments, virtualisation platforms and enterprise operating systems. They should also understand patch management, security hardening, monitoring, backups and technical troubleshooting.
The role requires someone who can respond to infrastructure incidents, work with different technical teams and maintain accurate IT service records.
A Broad Enterprise Infrastructure Role
The position covers a wide range of infrastructure responsibilities, from installing and maintaining physical hardware to administering virtual machines and enterprise operating systems.
It also involves storage and SAN management, infrastructure security, backup validation, patching, monitoring and Tier 2/3 technical support.
With at least five years of hands-on enterprise infrastructure experience required, the opportunity is aimed at an experienced professional who can operate confidently across complex infrastructure environments.
Candidates with strong RHEL, Oracle Linux, Solaris, VMware vSphere, enterprise storage and SAN experience, together with relevant automation skills, will meet the core technical profile outlined for the role. Preferred certifications and experience with technologies such as Ansible, Terraform and Oracle VM can further complement the required background.
