Automation and Systems Engineer
Reporting Line: IT Development Manager
Job Objective
The role is responsible for creating, implementing and maintaining software and automation solutions that improve the efficiency and reliability of the company’s systems and infrastructure. The position requires strong capabilities in software engineering, system architecture and technical solution design.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Analyse user and business requirements and convert them into appropriate system architectures and detailed software design specifications for automation and integration projects.
Build and deploy scalable automation and software solutions for system configuration, provisioning, monitoring and troubleshooting across enterprise platforms and integrations, with network environments including NNIs as an important area of application.
Incorporate monitoring and analytics features into automation platforms to support performance improvement, scalability, proactive system management, fault identification and reporting.
Create and maintain structured automation scripts, services and workflows using technologies such as Python, Ansible, Terraform and REST APIs.
Develop integrations between automation platforms and B/OSS systems while ensuring compatibility and effective interaction with existing technologies.
Investigate new technologies, development frameworks and architectural approaches that can strengthen automation capabilities and improve system operations.
Prepare and maintain technical documentation covering system architecture, design diagrams, automation procedures, integration workflows and technical guidelines.
Manage automation and systems engineering projects throughout the Software Development Life Cycle, from requirements gathering and architecture through development, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance.
Provide technical assistance and troubleshoot automated systems and processes in collaboration with operations teams.
Maintain the accuracy, completeness and consistency of business information while effectively managing master and transactional data.
Support business continuity by ensuring system and user data is backed up properly and regularly.
Identify areas where business processes can be automated and drive initiatives that reduce manual work and increase operational efficiency.
Apply appropriate security, reliability, system design and architectural standards across all automation and software solutions.
Support other departments and take the lead on assigned projects, preparing reports and updates as directed by the IT Development Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline from a recognized university.
Certifications in software development, systems or solutions architecture, or cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure or GCP are desirable.
Networking certifications including CCNA, CCNP or JNCIA will be an added advantage.
Experience and Technical Skills
At least three years of experience in systems engineering, software engineering, application development or a comparable technical position.
Strong understanding of system design, software architecture and development practices, including design patterns, microservices, API-first development and scalable architecture.
Good knowledge of networking technologies such as BGP, OSPF, DNS and DHCP.
Proficiency in developing automation using scripting languages such as Python and Bash.
Working knowledge of YANG, YAML and JSON.
Familiarity with REST APIs and their practical use.
Working knowledge of Git and version-control practices.
Strong understanding of concepts including SDLC, systems engineering, IT performance management, IT operations, operational monitoring, security monitoring and KPIs.
Knowledge of different IT infrastructure environments, including applications, servers, networks and storage systems.
