Laboratory Technician – Human Anatomy

Support the practical side of anatomy education by keeping the laboratory prepared, safe, orderly, and ready for teaching.

This role supports the Senior Laboratory Technologist in the day-to-day running of the Human Anatomy Laboratory within the School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. The successful candidate will be involved in specimen preparation, laboratory housekeeping, inventory control, dissection support, and safe handling of biological materials. Community service activities will also form part of the role.

Where you’ll make an impact

Laboratory readiness

• Prepare reagents, samples, and specimens required for practical teaching sessions.

• Help set up and maintain dissection stations before practical classes.

• Assist with the identification, collection, preservation, and tagging of specimens, including preparation for practical examinations.

• Support dissection and pro-section activities involving cadavers for teaching and study.

• Prepare preservative solutions used in embalming activities.

Laboratory care and safety

• Keep the Anatomy Laboratory clean, organized, and ready for use.

• Develop and maintain cleaning schedules for the Gross Anatomy Laboratory.

• Clean and, where required, sterilize instruments after laboratory sessions.

• Decontaminate laboratory equipment and work areas in accordance with established procedures.

• Maintain sharps containers and handle disposable biological waste according to facility protocols.

• Store chemicals, solutions, equipment, samples, and supplies appropriately and dispose of used materials in line with applicable guidelines.

• Keep storerooms and laboratory workspaces orderly at all times.

• Stay informed about relevant health, safety, legislative, and industry requirements affecting anatomy laboratory operations.

Records and resources

• Keep stock and inventory records for laboratory equipment, reagents, supplies, and other materials.

• Ensure solutions, chemicals, and apparatus are returned and properly stored after practical sessions.

• Record breakages, incidents, and other laboratory occurrences through the appropriate reporting process.

• Help monitor laboratory supplies and flag requirements where replenishment is needed.

What you’ll bring

• Certificate in Mortuary Sciences from an accredited institution, together with experience preparing human anatomy or pathology specimens; or

• Diploma in Mortuary Sciences from an accredited institution, with relevant specimen preparation experience.

• Previous experience working in an anatomy laboratory is an advantage.

• Practical understanding of specimen handling, preservation, laboratory hygiene, and safe working procedures.

• Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow established protocols carefully.

• A high level of confidentiality and integrity.

• Good interpersonal and communication skills.

• Ability to work cooperatively with laboratory and academic teams.

• Self-motivation, reliability, and adaptability.

• A demonstrated record of effective performance and professional conduct.

The role

The position reports to the Senior Laboratory Technologist responsible for the Anatomy Laboratory. It is well suited to someone who combines careful practical work with strong respect for laboratory safety, confidentiality, cleanliness, and the proper handling of human specimens.
