Asset Based Finance Sales and Customer Service Role
Job Summary
The role is responsible for achieving agreed sales targets in line with the bank’s business objectives through proactive selling of Asset Based Finance products and other Absa Bank products and services. The position also focuses on providing excellent customer service, responding to customer needs, supporting lead generation, and ensuring that applications and account-opening processes are completed accurately and in accordance with the required procedures.
The successful candidate will work directly with retail and business banking customers, identify suitable financial solutions, follow up on sales opportunities, support customers through the application process, and maintain strong relationships with both customers and internal teams. The role also requires a strong focus on compliance, operational accuracy, risk management, and personal development.
1. Sales to Retail Customers – 60%
The main responsibility of the role is to achieve sales targets by identifying customer needs and matching them with suitable Asset Based Finance products and other relevant bank products and services.
Key responsibilities include:
Delivering strong sales performance by understanding customer requirements and recommending Asset Based Finance and other appropriate Absa Bank products and services.
Providing direct sales support through quality lead generation and effective follow-up.
Identifying potential customers and converting suitable Asset Based Finance leads into completed sales.
Participating in Asset Based Finance product campaigns and clearly explaining the relevant product parameters to customers.
Working towards agreed sales targets for specific campaigns.
Meeting and exceeding assigned sales targets where possible.
Maintaining accurate personal sales performance statistics for management information and review.
Taking ownership of Asset Based Finance products and channel sales targets in order to support direct sales objectives.
Referring to the ABF BDM whenever clarification is required regarding product delivery or the application process.
Responding directly to customers and providing appropriate information regarding their applications and products.
Completing account-opening documentation together with customers.
Submitting completed account-opening documentation to the Line Manager for review before forwarding it to Operations for processing.
When selling Asset Based Finance products to Retail and Business Banking customers, completing the required financial analysis and reviewing customer statements and account information.
Identifying customers who do not meet the minimum requirements for the relevant product.
Advising customers verbally or in writing when their applications do not meet the required criteria, depending on the customer's preference.
Reporting declined or unsuccessful applications to the Line Manager on a daily basis.
Contacting customers after their accounts have been opened.
Providing customers with the relevant contact information for the branch where their account is held.
The role requires the candidate to remain proactive throughout the sales process, from identifying potential customers and generating leads through to following up on applications and supporting customers after account opening.
2. Customer Service – 15%
Customer service is an important part of the role. The successful candidate will take ownership of customer questions and complaints relating to Asset Based Finance and ensure that they are addressed within the required timelines.
Responsibilities include:
Handling customer queries and complaints concerning Asset Based Finance products.
Working to resolve customer issues promptly and professionally.
Escalating unresolved matters to the Line Manager, particularly where a query cannot be resolved within a short period.
Building effective relationships with internal service providers to support faster resolution of customer issues.
Working closely with the ABF Operations team, Sanctioners, and DSC when resolving escalated queries and complaints.
Keeping customers informed about the progress and outcome of their requests.
Advising customers as soon as new loans have been approved.
Encouraging customers to proceed with draw-downs on approved loans.
The candidate should maintain a customer-focused approach and ensure that customers receive timely and accurate information throughout their interactions with the bank.
3. Operational Rigour, Compliance and Controls – 15%
The role requires strict adherence to regulatory requirements, internal policies, operational procedures, and the Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework.
The successful candidate will be expected to understand and manage risks and risk events relevant to the position.
Key responsibilities include:
Ensuring the accuracy of every new account application.
Checking Asset Based Finance loan documentation carefully before submission.
Ensuring that all customer documents are accurate, complete, and properly prepared.
Taking personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of documents completed and submitted.
Maintaining high standards of operational rigour across all procedures and processes handled personally.
Working towards achieving green audit results through accurate and compliant execution of responsibilities.
Following the Retail end-to-end account-opening process.
Ensuring that new accounts are properly authorized.
Ensuring that customer accounts meet KYC requirements.
Escalating matters that exceed agreed service-level timelines to the Line Manager.
Escalating unresolved KYC requirements to the Line Manager.
Complying with Absa operational risk and rigour requirements.
Following Health and Safety standards.
Maintaining the security of the premises and related customer information.
Complying with KYC requirements.
Following applicable anti-money laundering regulations and procedures.
Ensuring that customer and account documentation is handled according to the required standards.
Operational accuracy is essential because the role involves customer documentation, financial information, account opening, and Asset Based Finance applications. The candidate must therefore ensure that information submitted for processing is complete and accurate.
4. Team and Personal Development – 10%
The role also contributes to the development and effectiveness of the wider sales team.
Responsibilities include:
Sharing relevant knowledge and experience with other Lead Generators within the team.
Supporting colleagues by providing assistance when required.
Providing cover for other Lead Generators during periods of excessive workload.
Providing cover during the absence of other team members.
Deputizing for the Line Manager whenever required.
Agreeing annual performance objectives with the Sales Manager.
Setting specific sales targets as part of the annual performance objectives.
Pursuing continued personal development through relevant training and development programmes.
Participating actively in development opportunities provided by the bank.
Applying knowledge gained through training and development to improve personal performance.
Sales and Performance Expectations
The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of assigned targets and actively contribute to the achievement of the bank's sales objectives.
This includes identifying customer opportunities, generating quality leads, following up consistently, converting suitable leads, and maintaining accurate records of sales performance.
The candidate should also ensure that customer interactions are handled professionally and that product information is communicated clearly. Where clarification is required, the appropriate internal support should be sought to ensure that customers receive accurate information.
Customer Relationship Management
Building and maintaining strong customer relationships is central to the position. The candidate should understand customer needs, respond to queries, provide relevant information, and follow up on applications and approved loans.
Effective customer relationship management should continue beyond the initial sale. Customers should be contacted after account opening and provided with relevant branch contact information to ensure that they know where to obtain further assistance.
Internal Collaboration
The position requires regular interaction with internal teams. The candidate will work with the ABF BDM, ABF Operations team, Sanctioners, DSC, Line Manager, Sales Manager, and other relevant teams.
Strong internal relationships will support timely processing of applications, resolution of customer queries, escalation of outstanding matters, and effective delivery of Asset Based Finance products.
Education Requirement
The required educational qualification is:
Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) in Business, Commerce and Management Studies.
The candidate should also demonstrate the ability to work within established procedures, communicate effectively with customers and colleagues, manage sales activities, and maintain accurate documentation.
Overall Role Expectations
The position combines sales, customer service, operational compliance, and teamwork responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to actively generate and convert Asset Based Finance opportunities while supporting the sale of other relevant bank products and services.
At the same time, the candidate must maintain high standards of customer service, ensure accurate completion of account and loan documentation, follow KYC and anti-money laundering requirements, manage operational risks, and comply with Absa policies and procedures.
