Duties and responsibilities

Lead the process of creating, reviewing, negotiating, and managing legal documents such as grants, research agreements, procurement contracts, leases, NDAs, Host Country Agreements, and other legal instruments to make sure they are legally solid and support operations on time.


Offer practical legal advice in various locations on topics like corporate law, regulations, employment, taxes, administrative issues, disputes, and other legal matters to help make decisions that are both wise and compliant.


Take charge of compliance support in the region, including handling investigations, managing cases, preparing reports, and delivering training, to help ensure that internal policies and external legal standards are followed.


Offer daily legal help to different departments and country offices to make sure their activities are carried out in a compliant, aware of risks, and efficient way.


Spot, evaluate, and reduce legal and regulatory risks such as data privacy, research ethics, health and safety, environmental concerns, and other new compliance needs to protect CIMMYT’s interests.


Work with Headquarters and regional partners on governance, understanding policies, and legal issues related to the institution to keep everything consistent and aligned across the region.


Do legal research, write legal opinions and other documents, and improve legal tools and processes to better support legal services throughout the region.


Requirements

A Master's degree in Law (LL.M.) or another advanced legal qualification.


At least 10 years of experience in a legal role, preferably as in-house legal counsel, with increasing responsibilities, especially if the work involves regional or multi-jurisdictional operations.


Strong background in contract management, legal advice, regulatory compliance, and risk management; experience in international non-profit, development, research, or agricultural research organizations is a plus.
