Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Special Assistant in the Law Division, the UN Volunteer will carry out the following responsibilities:
Help with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)'s duties as Secretariat under the Montevideo Programme V, such as organizing meetings, preparing background information, and writing meeting reports.
Do legal research on various topics related to environmental law under the Montevideo Programme V, including environmental rule of law, human rights and the environment, and new issues like the rights of nature and environmental crime.
Help review legal documents, instruments, or other materials related to environmental law and related fields under the Montevideo Programme V.
Support the Special Assistant in providing good administrative services to carry out the Division's responsibilities, including improving the Law Division's digital and knowledge platforms.
Help with the communication needs of the Law Division, such as updating and improving UNEP's website, InforMEA, and the UNEP Law and Environment Assistance Platform (UNEP-LEAP), and assist with the Division's reporting requirements.
Do other tasks as assigned.
Additionally, UN Volunteers are expected to:
Improve their understanding of volunteerism by reading related UN Volunteers (UNV) and other publications and by actively joining UNV events, such as those celebrating International Volunteer Day.
Learn about and build upon traditional and/or local volunteer practices in the host country.
Think about the type and quality of their volunteer work, including taking part in ongoing reflection activities.
Write articles or reports about their field experiences and send them to UNV publications, websites, newsletters, press releases, and so on.
Help with the UNV Buddy Programme for new UN Volunteers who have just arrived.
Encourage or guide local groups in using online volunteering, or promote the UNV Online Volunteering service to local individuals and organizations whenever it is technically possible.
Skills and experience
At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental law and governance.
Experience in environmental law and governance, including legal analysis, research, and writing.
Prior work experience at the international level is preferred.
Prior experience in communications is preferred.
Required education level
A bachelor's degree in Law, with a focus on environmental law and governance.
