Legal Officer Job Description
1. Job Summary
The Legal Officer is responsible for providing legal advice and support to the organization by ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. The role involves drafting and reviewing legal documents, managing litigation matters, conducting legal research, advising management on legal risks, and safeguarding the organization's legal interests.
The successful candidate will support corporate governance, regulatory compliance, contract management, dispute resolution, and policy development while ensuring that all organizational activities are conducted within the legal framework. The position requires sound legal knowledge, strong analytical skills, integrity, and the ability to provide practical legal solutions that support organizational objectives.
2. Key Duties and Responsibilities
2.1 Legal Advisory Services
The successful candidate will:
Provide legal advice to management and various departments.
Interpret laws, regulations, and policies affecting organizational operations.
Advise on legal risks associated with business activities.
Recommend practical legal solutions to support decision-making.
Ensure compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
Provide timely legal opinions on organizational matters.
2.2 Contract Management
The Legal Officer will:
Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal agreements.
Ensure contracts adequately protect the organization's interests.
Review contractual obligations and identify legal risks.
Maintain an updated contract management system.
Monitor contract compliance and renewal dates.
Provide legal guidance during contract negotiations.
2.3 Litigation and Dispute Resolution
The employee will:

2.4 Legal Research and Compliance

2.5 Corporate Governance
The Legal Officer will:

Support board and committee activities where required.
Promote ethical conduct and legal compliance throughout the organization.
2.6 Documentation and Record Management
The employee will:
Maintain accurate legal records and documentation.

Maintain updated registers of legal documents.
Prepare legal correspondence and reports.
Ensure proper filing of statutory documents.
2.7 Risk Management
The successful candidate will:
Identify legal and regulatory risks.

2.8 Stakeholder Engagement
The Legal Officer will:
Liaise with regulatory authorities and government agencies.

2.9 Administrative and Operational Support
The employee will:

3. Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree from a recognized university.
Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid current Practising Certificate.
Valid membership and practising licence from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
Membership of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICS) will be an added advantage.
4. Work Experience
The ideal candidate should have:
A minimum of three (3) years of post-admission practical legal experience.
Experience gained in a reputable law firm, corporate legal department, government institution, or public organization.
Practical experience in contract drafting, legal advisory, litigation support, and regulatory compliance.
Experience handling corporate legal matters and legal documentation.

The successful candidate will handle confidential legal information and may occasionally work beyond normal business hours to meet legal deadlines or organizational requirements.
