Legal Counsel

Job Purpose
The Legal Counsel will provide proactive and timely legal counsel to the organisation's operations in Kenya and support the implementation and execution of the Legal function's strategy and objectives.
The role will be responsible for advising the organisation's entities in Kenya on legal matters relating to commercial, operational, governance and regulatory aspects of the business.
Roles and Responsibilities
Operational, Professional and Business
Contribute to the development and execution of the Legal function's strategy.
Monitor and interpret the Kenyan legislative environment in which the business operates to ensure the organisation understands and meets its legal obligations.
Maintain a strong understanding of regulatory issues and the legal framework applicable to the business.
Develop informed solutions that enable the business to respond effectively to regulatory requirements and constraints.
Manage litigation instituted by or against the business as assigned by the Head of Legal, Kenya, including developing and executing case strategies.
Support the Head of Legal, Kenya, with entity management and ensure compliance with good corporate governance practices across the organisation's entities in Kenya.
Participate in cross-functional business projects and initiatives to assess, monitor and anticipate potential threats, minimise legal risks and support the achievement of business objectives.
Draft, negotiate and review contracts and other legal documentation.
Develop appropriate standard contractual formats to improve efficiency within the Legal function.
Carry out relevant administrative activities within the function to ensure availability of resources, continuous flow of information and maintenance of updated records.
Support efforts to strengthen the control environment within Legal in line with the business strategy.
Communicate effectively across functions and within the department to keep stakeholders informed and develop solutions to issues of mutual interest.
Leadership Capabilities
Support, implement and achieve the strategic plans and objectives of the Legal function in line with the overall business strategy.
Communicate effectively with the business on the relevance and strategic importance of the Legal function and areas under the role's responsibility.
Identify new initiatives and proposals that align with the business strategy and values, ensuring Legal operates as an effective risk management and business partner.
Identify and map internal and external stakeholders relevant to areas of responsibility and build strong relationships to improve the effectiveness of legal activities.
Continuously improve systems and work processes to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
Educational Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
Recognised legal qualification from a reputable academic institution, with demonstrated competence in providing legal advice to internal stakeholders.
At least 3–4 years of post-qualification legal experience.
At least 2–3 years of experience in fast-paced law firms is desirable.
Experience in litigation management.
Experience in company secretarial practice and board matters is desirable, including CPSK qualification.
Thorough knowledge of local substantive and procedural laws relevant to the areas of responsibility, including commercial law, labour laws, land laws, factory and manufacturing regulations, and EHS legislation.
Strong negotiation skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
