Library Assistant
Job Purpose
The Library Assistant will oversee the organisation and management of library resources while supporting library users in line with SHOFCO’s goal of expanding access to education within underserved communities.
Key Responsibilities
Identify, assess, and select appropriate books and other library resources.
Organise and coordinate special library initiatives, including community outreach activities.
Assist in preparing library budgets, reports, and other relevant documentation.
Ensure the library opens promptly according to the designated operating schedule.
Catalogue and classify library resources using barcodes, call numbers, and established library systems.
Assist users and ensure their information and resource needs are effectively addressed.
Assess users’ requirements and recommend suitable books and other learning materials.
Locate requested resources and provide them to library users.
Enter new information into the library management system and ensure existing records are regularly updated.
Properly arrange returned books and other materials on the appropriate shelves.
Repair damaged books where necessary and keep catalogue records accurate and up to date.
Orient new users to the library programme and provide clear information about available resources and activities.
Maintain a clean, welcoming, and suitable environment that supports learning and reading.
Academic Qualifications
Certificate in Library and Information Science.

Experience and Other Requirements
At least one year of experience providing library-related services.
Knowledge or experience in records management will be an added advantage.
Ability to effectively manage library resources, collections, and day-to-day operations.

Ability to communicate and present information clearly.
Strong attention to detail when reviewing and assessing information.
Ability to develop practical ideas and identify opportunities for improvement.
Good checking and verification skills to maintain accurate library records and resources.
