Transport Lead
Role Outline
The Transport Lead will oversee daily transport operations to ensure the safe, compliant, cost-effective, and efficient movement of goods. The role involves leading transport teams, managing fleet performance, meeting customer service requirements, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to improve operational performance, safety, and productivity.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Lead and coordinate daily transport activities to meet customer and business requirements.
Monitor fleet utilization and optimize vehicle routing, load planning, and vehicle allocation.
Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Monitor driver progress and promptly address unexpected challenges or deviations from the plan.
Use transportation management systems and tracking tools to monitor shipments and vehicles in real time.
Ensure shipments are collected and delivered on time.
Resolve operational issues and service disruptions promptly.
Supervise transport controllers, planners, drivers, and support staff.
Conduct daily operational briefings and performance reviews.
Develop employee capabilities through coaching, mentoring, and training.
Promote a positive safety culture and employee engagement.
Ensure service levels meet or exceed contractual customer expectations.
Oversee vehicle availability, utilization, maintenance, and compliance.
Monitor transport costs, including fuel, maintenance, labor, and subcontractor expenses.
Identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve productivity without compromising safety or service delivery.
Manage the performance of transport-related suppliers and contractors.
Ensure compliance with transport legislation, road safety regulations, and company policies.
Ensure drivers have valid licenses and permits and complete required training.
Ensure loads depart within agreed dispatch windows.
Control delivery documents, vehicle keys, GPS devices, fuel cards, and mobile phones.
Coordinate the resolution of delivery issues with customer service teams and relevant stakeholders.
Maintain accurate transport records and operational documentation.
Qualifications and Experience
Diploma or degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
Relevant professional qualification is an added advantage.
3–5 years of experience in transport or logistics operations, with responsibility for coordinating teams, resources, and daily service delivery.
3–5 years of experience in a transport logistics, supply chain, or FMCG environment.
Practical experience in dispatch planning, route and load optimization, fleet utilization, driver monitoring, and transport scheduling.
Experience using transportation management systems and tracking tools.
Experience in customer service and resolving operational issues.
Experience supporting Kenya-based transport operations and knowledge of applicable local road transport requirements.
Fluent written and spoken communication skills.
