Our client, a Christian NGO expanding its operations in Kenya, is seeking an entrepreneurial and practical General Manager to establish, manage, and grow its local operations. The successful candidate will initially lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 5–15 professionals working across areas such as finance, customer service, technology, and other professional functions.
The role will involve close collaboration with global leadership and international functional teams while taking direct responsibility for the development of the Kenya operation.
Key Responsibilities
Take charge of the day-to-day establishment and growth of the organization’s Kenya operations.
Lead, develop, and motivate an initial multidisciplinary team of approximately 5–15 employees.
Coordinate recruitment, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and employee development.
Define clear objectives, responsibilities, accountability structures, and effective working relationships within the team.
Coordinate local operational, financial, administrative, employment, and compliance requirements.
Work closely with global Finance, HR, Legal, Compliance, Technology, and Operations teams.
Monitor budgets, expenditure, procurement activities, documentation, internal controls, and local service providers.
Identify and address operational and personnel-related challenges, escalating major issues when necessary.
Develop, document, implement, and continually improve processes that support a scalable Kenya operation.
Prepare regular operational reports and updates for global leadership.
Develop strong working relationships between the Kenya team and colleagues from different countries and cultural backgrounds.
Help create a positive organizational culture that reflects the organization’s Christian mission and values.
Provide spiritual leadership through prayer, biblical principles, and personal example.
Maintain a hands-on approach and directly support operational or professional activities whenever required.
Qualifications and Experience
Demonstrated leadership or team-building experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
Approximately 3–5 years of meaningful experience building or managing a small team or operation is desirable.
MBA or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience is preferred.
Experience leading or helping establish a team, organization, business unit, project, or operational function.
Experience managing a team of approximately 10–15 people is an advantage.
Experience establishing a new team, office, business unit, start-up, nonprofit organization, or similar operation is highly desirable.
Relevant experience in finance, accounting, operations, technology, customer service, HR, compliance, or nonprofit management is an advantage.
International or multicultural work experience is beneficial.
Familiarity with Kenya’s business, employment, tax, nonprofit, or regulatory environment is an advantage.
Key Skills and Attributes
Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Entrepreneurial, hands-on, and practical approach to work.
Solution-oriented mindset with strong initiative.
Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
High level of ownership, attention to detail, and ability to follow through on responsibilities.
Ability to learn quickly and work effectively with subject-matter specialists.
Ability to collaborate successfully with international and multicultural teams.
Humble and receptive to coaching and feedback.
Commitment to biblical values.
Leadership Growth Opportunity
The organization is looking for a leader who can develop alongside the Kenya operation. As the organization grows, strong performance may create opportunities to take on wider senior leadership responsibilities. Leadership potential, ability to learn, character, judgment, and the ability to build and develop teams are considered important alongside previous job titles.
Working Environment
Lead a small but expanding Kenya-based team while maintaining regular interaction with colleagues internationally.
Working hours will generally need to overlap significantly with European and U.S. Eastern time zones, typically around 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Kenya time.
The position combines leadership responsibilities, meetings, analysis, documentation, and direct operational work.
Additional working hours may occasionally be required during critical operational periods.
