Medical Officer
Main Duties and Responsibilities
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Medical Officer to provide medical care and support to patients within the hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, managing, stabilizing, and treating patients presenting with both minor ailments and emergency conditions.
The role requires a medical professional who can assess patients appropriately, provide timely care, participate in hospital activities, support clinical procedures, and contribute to quality improvement and primary healthcare initiatives.
The Medical Officer will work closely with consultants and other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients receive appropriate and timely medical attention.
1. Patient Management and Treatment
The Medical Officer will be responsible for managing, stabilizing, and treating patients presenting to the hospital.
This will include attending to patients with minor ailments as well as those presenting with emergency conditions. The Medical Officer will be expected to assess each patient appropriately and provide the required medical care based on their presenting condition.
2. Patient Assessment
The role will involve assessing the urgency and severity of patients' presenting problems.
This will be achieved through:
Taking comprehensive patient histories.
Conducting appropriate physical examinations.
Requesting and reviewing relevant investigations.
Assessing the urgency and severity of presenting conditions.
Determining the appropriate course of treatment and management.
The Medical Officer should be able to assess patients carefully and respond appropriately to their medical needs.
3. Admission, Discharge and Referral
The Medical Officer will be responsible for admitting and discharging patients as appropriate.
Where necessary, patients will be referred to specialists for further assessment or management. The Medical Officer will also arrange referrals for diagnostic, therapeutic, and support services as required.
This responsibility requires appropriate clinical judgment when determining whether a patient requires admission, discharge, specialist review, or additional services.
4. Clinical and Minor Procedures
The successful candidate will undertake clinical and minor procedures within the unit.
The Medical Officer will also participate in hospital rounds and support the clinical needs of patients during these rounds. This may include activities such as fixing cannulas, fixing catheters, reviewing patients, and carrying out other relevant clinical responsibilities.
5. Timely Patient Care
The Medical Officer will help ensure that all patients presenting to the clinic are attended to within a reasonable time.
Timely attention to patients will be an important part of the role, particularly when managing patients who may require urgent assessment or treatment.
The Medical Officer will therefore be expected to manage patient care efficiently while maintaining appropriate clinical standards.
6. Ambulance Services
The Medical Officer will participate in ambulance services as required.
This responsibility forms part of the wider patient care duties and will involve supporting the hospital's ambulance service activities.
7. Work and Activity Planning
The Medical Officer will prepare weekly work and activity plans for review.
These plans will support the organisation and coordination of the Medical Officer's activities and responsibilities.

8. Patient Reviews and Consultant Feedback
The Medical Officer will conduct patient reviews and communicate relevant feedback to the respective consultants.

Effective communication and accurate feedback will be important when carrying out this responsibility.
9. Monitoring Health Indicators
The Medical Officer will closely monitor morbidity and mortality trends together with other health indicators.
This responsibility will contribute to the monitoring of patient and hospital health outcomes and support the identification of relevant trends.
The Medical Officer will be expected to participate in activities related to monitoring these indicators as part of the wider clinical responsibilities.
10. Primary Healthcare and Outreach
The role will include participation in primary healthcare activities.
The Medical Officer will participate in counselling and outreach programmes aimed at supporting primary healthcare.
These activities will provide an opportunity to contribute to healthcare beyond routine hospital-based patient management and support the delivery of appropriate health information and services through outreach initiatives.
11. Continuous Medical Education
The Medical Officer will participate in continuous medical education programmes.
Continuous medical education will support professional development and provide opportunities for continued learning in relation to medical practice.
The successful candidate will therefore be expected to participate in relevant medical education programmes as part of their responsibilities.
12. Quality Improvement
The Medical Officer will participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department.
The candidate will also be required to provide reports as required in relation to quality improvement activities.
Participation in these initiatives will contribute to improving the quality of services provided within the department.
13. Other Assigned Duties
The Medical Officer will carry out other relevant or requested duties as may be required.
The successful candidate will also perform any other duties assigned by the relevant authority.
Required Qualifications
Applicants for the Medical Officer position should meet the following requirements:
Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB).
BLS, ACLS, and ATLS training.
Computer proficiency.
Minimum of 2 years' experience as a Medical Officer.
Registration with KMPDC and a valid practicing license.
Previous experience working in a busy hospital will be an added advantage.
Candidates should ensure that they meet the required academic, professional, and experience requirements before submitting their applications.
