Registered Nurse – Midwife

Job Overview

The Registered Nurse – Midwife will be responsible for delivering day-to-day maternal and newborn care within the maternity unit of IRC-supported health facilities. The role involves working closely with doctors, nurses, clinical officers, auxiliary nurses and theatre teams to provide safe, respectful and high-quality care to mothers and newborns. The position will also support the management of gynaecological, emergency obstetric and neonatal cases.

Key Responsibilities

Maternal and Newborn Care

• Provide quality nursing and midwifery care to mothers and newborns throughout admission, hospitalization and discharge.

• Conduct daily clinical assessments and monitor the general condition of patients.

• Identify complications early, exercise sound clinical judgement and promptly seek assistance when necessary.

• Stabilize mothers and newborns appropriately while escalating cases requiring additional medical attention.

• Assess mothers and babies for readiness for discharge and ensure all required documentation is completed.

Antenatal Care

• Conduct routine antenatal assessments and monitor maternal and fetal vital signs.

• Arrange and interpret relevant diagnostic investigations.

• Provide mothers with education on nutrition, birth preparedness and other aspects of safe pregnancy.

• Identify potential risks and complications requiring further assessment or intervention.

Labour and Delivery

• Monitor labour using the appropriate labour care guide.

• Provide physical, emotional and clinical support to women throughout labour.

• Administer prescribed medications, including antibiotics, uterotonics and analgesics.

• Conduct normal vaginal deliveries and perform AMTSL as required.

• Participate in the multidisciplinary management of complicated deliveries, including breech presentations and assisted vaginal deliveries where necessary.

• Perform neonatal resuscitation when required.

Postnatal Care

• Monitor mothers following delivery for complications such as haemorrhage and infection.

• Assess uterine involution and lochia.

• Support early mobilization and recovery following childbirth.

• Educate mothers on breastfeeding, perineal care and postpartum family planning.

• Monitor newborns and identify any conditions requiring further intervention.

Emergency Management and Referral

• Recognize obstetric and neonatal emergencies at an early stage and initiate timely interventions.

• Escalate complicated cases to medical officers or other appropriate healthcare professionals.

• Prepare referral documentation for patients requiring additional care.

• Ensure necessary medicines and equipment are available for patient transfers.

• Accompany patients during internal referrals or transfers to external healthcare facilities when required.

• Use SBAR effectively during handovers and referrals.

Documentation and Reporting

• Maintain complete, accurate and up-to-date clinical records, patient charts and electronic medical records.

• Complete relevant Ministry of Health reports and other required documentation.

• Record admissions, discharges, transfers and deaths accurately and promptly.

• Prepare daily nursing care activity reports during shift handovers.

• Participate in mortality reviews and relevant clinical audits.

• Ensure patient and programme data is properly recorded and used to support decision-making.

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety

• Apply appropriate nursing care models and work with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient management.

• Follow infection prevention and control requirements and national healthcare guidelines.

• Participate in MPDSR audits, quality improvement activities and other patient-safety initiatives.

• Promote respectful maternity care and maintain a safe environment for patients, relatives and staff.

• Ensure equipment and instruments are appropriately cleared, processed and maintained after procedures.

Leadership and Team Coordination

• Provide ward coverage and take responsibility for patient care during assigned shifts.

• Participate in doctors’ rounds and support effective ward management.

• Take team leadership responsibilities when assigned and make appropriate decisions regarding patient and staff management.

• Attend ward meetings, hospital meetings, CMEs and relevant training sessions.

• Facilitate or support continuous medical education activities where required.

Equipment and Emergency Preparedness

• Ensure maternity equipment, suction machines, resuscitation equipment and procedure sets are functional and properly maintained.

• Maintain accurate equipment inventories and submit reports as required.

• Ensure emergency trays and essential equipment are available and ready for use.

• Check emergency crash carts and maternity equipment at every shift.

• Monitor and update emergency supplies daily through structured shift handovers.

• Report equipment shortages, faults or operational concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

Operations and Compliance

• Maintain accountability for medical equipment and supplies and support proper ordering processes.

• Report significant operational or clinical changes to the head nurse or supervisor.

• Comply with IRC-Kenya policies and procedures covering finance, logistics, information technology, security, communications and human resources/administration.

• Follow new procedures, guidelines and instructions issued by senior management or field leadership.

• Carry out other responsibilities assigned by the supervisor as operational needs arise.

Confidentiality

• Protect confidential information relating to IRC, its operations, patients and other stakeholders.

• Do not disclose information obtained during employment to unauthorized individuals or organizations, except where disclosure is necessary for the proper execution of assigned duties.

Qualifications and Experience

• Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) or Kenya Registered Midwife (KRM) qualification from a recognized nursing training institution.

• Current registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya and a valid practising licence.

• At least two years of clinical experience working in a busy maternity ward or similar healthcare facility.

• Certificate or training in Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EMONC) is an added advantage.

• Strong clinical judgement, critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Compassionate, patient-focused approach to care.

• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

• Good leadership, negotiation and interpersonal skills.

Additional Advantages

• Previous experience working in a resource-limited or humanitarian setting.

• Ability to communicate in the local language.
