Critical Care Nurse (3 Posts) at PCEA Chogoria Hospital
About this role
The job centres on providing safe nursing care to critically ill patients while monitoring their progress, administering prescribed treatments and responding appropriately when their condition changes. It also involves working with families, maintaining detailed clinical records and ensuring that critical care equipment is used correctly.
A Nursing Role Where Constant Observation Matters
Patients in ICU and HDU require close monitoring throughout their stay. The nurse will be responsible for observing vital signs and paying attention to changes that could indicate improvement, deterioration or the need for immediate intervention.
This requires strong clinical assessment skills. A critical care nurse needs to recognise important changes and communicate them promptly to the appropriate members of the medical team.
The work is not limited to checking vital signs at set intervals. The nurse will remain actively involved in the patient's care and will need to respond to changes in the clinical condition as they arise.
That makes critical thinking an important part of the job. Information from monitoring equipment, clinical observations, treatment responses and patient records all contribute to decisions about ongoing care.
Medication, IV Therapy and Blood Products
Treatment in critical care can involve several therapies that need to be administered carefully.
The nurse will administer medications, intravenous therapies and blood products according to the required clinical procedures. Accuracy is particularly important because critically ill patients can be highly sensitive to changes in treatment and dosage.
Safe medication administration will therefore form part of the nurse's routine responsibilities, together with appropriate observation of the patient following treatment.
The nurse must also maintain accurate documentation so that other members of the healthcare team have a clear record of what has been administered and how the patient has responded.
Working With Critical Care Equipment
ICU and HDU nursing involves regular interaction with specialised equipment.
The nurse will operate and monitor equipment such as ventilators, cardiac monitors and infusion pumps. Understanding how these devices are used is important because they provide essential information and support for patients whose conditions require intensive care.
Equipment must also be used properly and maintained appropriately. The nurse will help ensure that critical care equipment and supplies are available, functional and handled correctly.
This responsibility requires attention to detail. A problem with equipment or supplies can affect patient care, so issues need to be recognised and addressed promptly.
When Emergencies Happen
Critical care nurses must be prepared to act when a patient's condition suddenly deteriorates.
The position involves assisting with emergency procedures, resuscitation and advanced life support interventions. This requires the ability to remain organised and work effectively with other healthcare professionals during high-pressure situations.
Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification are therefore part of the requirements for the position.
Experience in an ICU, HDU, Emergency Department or another similar critical care environment is also required. At least two years of relevant experience will give the nurse practical exposure to the type of situations that can arise in this setting.
Keeping Patient Information Accurate
Clinical documentation is another important part of critical care nursing.
The nurse will maintain accurate patient records and nursing documentation throughout the patient's care. Records need to clearly reflect relevant observations, treatments and other aspects of nursing care.
Accurate documentation supports communication between healthcare professionals and helps maintain continuity when different members of the team take responsibility for the patient.
It also forms part of professional and regulatory nursing practice. The nurse is expected to maintain the required standards when recording and handling patient information.
Infection Prevention Cannot Be Overlooked
Critically ill patients can require intensive medical intervention and may be particularly vulnerable to complications. Infection prevention is therefore an important responsibility within the role.
The nurse will implement infection prevention measures and patient safety protocols as part of daily clinical practice.
This includes following established procedures and maintaining safe practices while caring for patients, administering treatment and handling equipment.
Patient safety also extends beyond infection prevention. The nurse is expected to follow professional and regulatory standards throughout the delivery of care.
Working as Part of a Larger Clinical Team
Critical care nursing is highly collaborative. The nurse will work with a multidisciplinary team to ensure that patient care is properly coordinated.
This requires clear communication with doctors, fellow nurses and other healthcare professionals involved in the patient's treatment.
Teamwork becomes particularly important during emergencies and changes in patient condition. Everyone involved needs access to relevant information and must understand what is happening with the patient.
The nurse will also communicate with patients' families, providing appropriate education and support concerning treatment and ongoing care.
Families may have questions about what is happening and what continued care may involve. Being able to communicate clearly and respectfully is therefore an important part of the position.
Maintaining Standards Beyond the Bedside
The responsibilities of the nurse extend beyond direct patient care.
The position includes participation in quality improvement initiatives and audits. The nurse will also be expected to take part in continuous professional development.
These activities help maintain clinical standards and provide opportunities to identify areas where nursing practices can be improved.
The nurse must also uphold professional, ethical and regulatory standards at all times. This requires responsibility, professionalism and a commitment to providing care according to accepted nursing requirements.
Qualifications for the Position
Candidates should hold either a Diploma or Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognised institution. A Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing is also required, reflecting the specialised nature of the position.
Applicants must be registered nurses with a valid Nursing Council of Kenya practising licence.
Current BLS and ACLS certification is required.
In terms of experience, candidates need at least two years of work in an ICU, HDU, Emergency Department or a comparable critical care environment.
The required experience should give applicants familiarity with critically ill patients, emergency situations, specialised equipment and the demands of intensive nursing care.
The Skills That Matter in Critical Care
Technical qualifications alone are not enough for this type of nursing position. The nurse needs to be able to assess patients carefully, interpret changes in their condition and think clearly when making decisions or escalating concerns.
Strong critical-thinking skills will be important when dealing with changing clinical situations.
Communication is equally necessary. The nurse will communicate with the multidisciplinary team as well as patients and their families. Information needs to be conveyed accurately, particularly when a patient's condition changes.
Teamwork is another essential requirement because critical care depends on several professionals working together toward the same patient-care objectives.
A Position Built Around Close Patient Care
This Critical Care Nurse role brings together specialised nursing knowledge, emergency response, patient monitoring, treatment administration and multidisciplinary teamwork.
The nurse will be closely involved in the care of critically ill patients, from monitoring vital signs and operating critical care equipment to supporting emergency interventions and communicating with families.
For a registered nurse with a Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing, valid professional licensing and BLS and ACLS certification, the position calls for practical experience and the ability to provide focused care in a demanding clinical environment. The emphasis throughout the role is on patient safety, accurate clinical practice, teamwork and maintaining professional nursing standards.
