Locum Nutritionist
Job Purpose
The Locum Nutritionist will report to the Senior Nutrition Officer and support nutrition services at health facilities. The role will focus on nutrition screening, management of acute malnutrition, micronutrient supplementation, maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN), and timely nutrition reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Implement Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) and manage under-five children and pregnant and breastfeeding women enrolled in OTP and TSFP programmes in line with WHO and national guidelines.
Conduct nutrition screening and ensure timely identification and treatment of acute malnutrition among children and pregnant and lactating women.
Participate in nutrition data collection, register updates, tablet data entry and reporting.
Participate in daily ward rounds in the Stabilization Centre (SC), ensuring prescribed treatments, observations and procedures are properly completed and documented.
Ensure children below six months and their mothers receive appropriate care in line with MAMI and IMAM guidelines.
Support nutrition surveillance and assessment activities at health facilities and community level.
Support capacity building and on-the-job training for CHWs, OPD staff and auxiliary health workers.
Implement MIYCN interventions through individual and group counselling and health education sessions.
Integrate MIYCN activities with CMAM programmes.
Monitor the use of nutrition commodities and conduct daily stock reconciliation.
Prepare and submit weekly nutrition reports and monthly MOH summary reports for entry into KHIS and LMIS.
Participate in facility data review meetings and present performance against key nutrition indicators.
Coordinate with the pharmacist and facility in-charge to forecast and order nutrition commodities based on consumption and the number of clients under treatment.
Provide nutrition assessment, counselling and support in NCD clinics, MCH/OPD, medical wards and special clinics, including POPC and LBW/preterm services.
Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
Diploma in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized institution.
Registration with the Kenya Nutritionists and Dietitians Institute (KNDI).
Experience and Competencies
At least 3 years of experience working with an INGO in emergency community nutrition.
Experience in maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN).
Experience implementing Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM).
Experience implementing and monitoring High Impact Nutrition Interventions (HiNi).
Experience with IMAM Surge approaches.
Experience conducting nutrition surveys and assessments.
Strong analytical, communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to think strategically and work effectively in challenging environments.
Experience in report writing and strong computer skills, including the use of Health Information Systems (HIS).
Ability to work in hardship areas; previous camp experience is an added advantage.
Strong planning and implementation skills.
Flexible, positive and adaptable approach to work.
Strong negotiation, communication and networking abilities.
