We are looking for a compassionate, adaptable, and experienced bilingual educator who is fluent in French and English to provide dedicated one-to-one support to an elementary school student. This temporary role will help the student transition successfully into an English-speaking school setting while promoting academic development, effective communication, social-emotional wellbeing, and confidence in everyday school activities.
The successful candidate will be patient, supportive, and encouraging, working in partnership with classroom teachers, student-support staff, and the family to create a positive transition and gradually build the student’s independence.
Key Responsibilities
Provide individualized assistance to the student throughout the school day.
Help the student follow classroom lessons, instructions, assignments, expectations, and daily routines.
Provide French-English interpretation or translation where necessary to facilitate communication and understanding.
Encourage the development of English language abilities through supportive, age-appropriate interactions.
Reinforce lessons and provide further explanations or practice when the student requires additional support.
Help the student become familiar and comfortable with the new school, classroom, language, and cultural setting.
Support the student with organization, movement between lessons and activities, and completion of schoolwork.
Build the student’s confidence in communicating and interacting with teachers and classmates.
Encourage constructive relationships with peers and participation in school and classroom activities.
Work alongside classroom teachers to clarify or appropriately adapt learning activities where required.
Share relevant observations regarding the student’s progress, challenges, and needs with teachers and other designated school personnel.
Gradually reduce direct support and encourage greater independence as the student becomes more confident and proficient in English.
Maintain strict confidentiality and comply fully with school safeguarding policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Skills
Fluency in both French and English, with strong spoken communication abilities in each language.
Previous experience working with children of elementary school age.
Background in teaching, tutoring, learning support, EAL/ESL, or a related educational role.
Patient, compassionate, adaptable, and able to build positive relationships with students.
Ability to explain academic material in a manner that is appropriate for the child’s age and level of understanding.
Understanding of how translation can facilitate transition while progressively encouraging the student to communicate more independently in English.
Ability to work effectively with classroom teachers and other professionals involved in student support.
Reliable, well-organized, professional, and attentive to the individual needs of the student.
A teaching credential, degree in education, EAL/ESL background, learning-support experience, or previous experience assisting multilingual learners in an international school environment is preferred.
Contract
This is a temporary position starting as soon as possible and running through December 2026.
An extension beyond December 2026 may be considered based on the student’s needs and the effectiveness of the support arrangement.
