Night Shift Phlebotomist

Role Summary

The Night Shift Phlebotomist will help improve laboratory turnaround times and specimen quality during overnight operations. The role will contribute to better patient and customer experiences by reducing delays in receiving results across Outpatient, Casualty, Inpatient and ICU services. The position will also support compliance with ISO 15189:2022 pre-analytical quality standards while providing a cost-efficient alternative to routinely scheduling Laboratory Technologists throughout the night shift.

Key Responsibilities

• Accurately confirm patient identities and collect blood and other required specimens through venipuncture across OP, Casualty, IP and ICU departments.

• Ensure specimens are correctly labelled, handled, stored and transported in accordance with established SOPs, giving priority to urgent and STAT samples.

• Recognize specimens that do not meet quality requirements, report them appropriately and coordinate prompt recollection to reduce pre-analytical errors.

• Deliver respectful and compassionate patient care, including when attending to children, elderly patients, critically ill individuals and patients who are difficult to bleed.

• Follow all infection prevention and control requirements, including appropriate PPE use, aseptic practices and safe handling of sharps.

• Keep track of phlebotomy supplies and equipment and promptly communicate any shortages, faults or other operational concerns.

• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, continuing medical education activities and competency assessments whenever required.
